With a father that has a masters degree from cambridge

you could say it’s a let-down that I dropped out of school at the age of 16, with no qualifications. It was a stupid act of childishness, at the time, but that’s behind me..I can’t change it.

I’m nearly 17 now, and don’t have any future prospects other than self employment; I was thinking of doing something on ebay with a friend. Starting up a small business, working from there, but if I’m totally honest, I lack the motivation to do anything.

I’m starting to get really depressed, housebound, my friends ask me to go out, I turn them down.

I’d really like to meet a nice girl, but I have no hopes of doing that while I’m stuck 24/7 in front of the computer.

I really don’t know what’s wrong with me, or what I should do with myself..

help?

Aww snap! Well not quite, my dad’s got a degree from cambridge and the look from my parents when I told them I wanted to follow the graphic design route and quite all the boring sciences is so crushing, never mind the “YOU WILL NEVER GET A JOB!”.

But nevermind that, you could still study? Go to college, I know it may seem a chore now but there is still time :) If that’s a no think about something that you enjoy? Got that? Well I’m sure you can make a career from that, surely?

Zyler, here’s the real deal: society considers that anyone who drops out of school doesn’t have the self-discipline or drive to succeed at ANYTHING else. Now, think about that: if a person had a roof over his or her head, food, clothing and a safe and secure home, and with that kind of support system in place STILL couldn’t get through high school, that tells you that you’re looking at one unmotivated and unfocused individual. You are not going to get a decent job without a high school diploma. And you are not getting into college without a H.S. diploma or G.E.D. certificate. Now, no decent jobs means that you aren’t going to have any decent prospects for supporting a family. A business on eBay? But you don’t even have the motivation to leave the house. What you really need is someone to kick you in the rear, really hard. Since no one else looks like he or she is going to do it, you are going to have to kick yourself in the seat of the pants. You are going to have to get off your lazy behind and finish high school at night or online or some kind of way. But you’re dead in the water without that diploma. It seems to me, Zyler, that you have never, ever had to push yourself to be somewhere by a certain time, or to meet any kind of deadline. Like too many kids, you’ve led the life of Riley–a life of complete ease. You are well on your way to becoming a professional bum. Without your parents, you’d be on the street right now, begging for spare change. Is that what you want to do with your life–be a beggar? It doesn’t matter how SMART you are if you do not apply yourself. Right now all you need is an empty whiskey bottle to put you on Skidrow . . . so get up from behind that computer monitor and tell your parents you want to finish high school! Then DO it! If you cannot do that, you might as well start on that beggar’s life . . . !

Hi I know it was ages ago that you made this post, but still thought you may read the replies… hopefully!

Well I was just thinking that you could do worse than to get a job with on-job training. For example a plumber or electrician you know that kind of thing. You’ll get a wage at first with that but it will be really bad but later on when you’re qualified you would get a good wage with those jobs because there is always demand for good workmen. Alternatively if you aren’t a mans man (I don’t know what kind of boy you are!?) you could try to get an apprenticeship in a hairdressers? Same sort of prospects as the workmen. Anyway thats just food for thought, and I hope it helps :)
