I do not have Diabetes but I am Hypoglycemic, which is low blood sugar rather then high. I’ve had many talks with someone I know who is Diabetic. If you have some questions I might be able to help.
Thanks for that, I am still getting it together in my head and ready to discuss with my husband when he gets home tonight.
What really hits me about this is my whole social life revolves around wine. My husband and I go to formal wine tastings and have a well stocked wine cellar. Don’t someone give me hassle for wine drinking as they did on another post. I am not talking about fall down drunk, I am talking about enjoying a nice bottle of fine wine on a Friday night after a hard week at work. I love drinking fine wine and identifying the the flavours and notes contained within it.
I am a keen cook and often cook with wine and spend time and care thinking about what wine complements the dishes I make, a lot of my weekend is lovingly devoted to this, it is my hobby.
I have just got over a severe depression which left me in hospital to end up with this. I am also waiting for a hysterectomy to take out my fibroids and polycyctic ovaries. I am having a hard time keeping optimistic here.
Wow.
I wish I had some words that would help change things around for you. I really hope you can get some good news about something soon. I’m really sorry to hear about all of that, but I’m sure you’ll have things turn for the better soon.
Diabetes is something that can be controlled if you listen to what your doctors have to say about treatments. Just pay attention to it and eat right.
I know it sounds like a scary thing, it is a little spooky. But it’s only really bad if you don’t listen to the doctors.
I think talking with your husband about all of the pressures you’re going through might help a lot. I think he will be able to help you.
Bonnie,
I am & have been a type II diabetic for quite along time. When it comes to diabetes you have nothing to fear. Damage to your body from diabetes takes quite a long time in most cases. This afford you alot time to take precautions. You just need to monitor your sugar levels & know when & what makes your level get elevated then learn how to best control it. Rather by a healthier lower carb intake diet or a regular execise routine. You need to be educated on what foods effect your diabetes and the best ways/methods to keep it under control. But you must monitor your sugar levels or you will never know how you are doing. In my humble opinion this is where people make a mistake. Since in alot of cases people don’t really feel like they are diabetic they tend to ignore it until years down the line they develope complications from it. Then they tend to get serious about it after damage has been done. You need to be proactive & educate yourself about it & take precautions before it causes you complications several years down the line.
I do what I can. I know you said you enjoy wine & are a great cook. When I go out I still drink. But instead of drinking several bottles of beer that are really high in carbs & calorie. I opt to have a rum & diet coke w/ a slice of lime. I get my alchohol without a bunch of additional carbs & calories. ( i know i should skip it but ya know us guys!) I try & eat meat & vegis. I stay away from the starches pies, breads, rice when I can & if I cant I limit myself to enough to satify my cravings.
You can do it! You can deal with it! It is easy! I assure you! Some people get it controled enough to where the diabetes goes away!
David
Thanks for that. I think I am calming down now, when I first got the news I paniced. I think it is bad that my first reaction was about drinking wine, maybe that was an indication in itself that lifestyle changes had to be made.
I have had a bit of a blowout this weekend, I am seeing the doctor next week to discuss diet and lifestyle changes, which I will adhere to.
I love the support I have had from other people who are diabetic. For example, my boss told me he has had it for years and to come and talk to him whenever I want advice. A friend told me her husband has it and will help me to plan meals. It is also good to be able to talk about it on help.com and appreciate your replies.
I love a rum and coke, so thanks for that tip. ONE on a Friday night after the working week will be nice.
thanks ….
My mother is a diabetic, as were her mother and grandmother. I am hypoglycemic. I noticed that you mentioned polycystic ovaries. My sister has PCOS, too.
I hope that you are starting to come to terms with your diagnosis now since it has been a couple of months. I hope that your diabetes is manageable and that you have a good doctor who helps you find the resources to maintain it. If it is manageable, you won’t have to give up your wine for good; you just won’t be able to have it regularly.
Good luck to you.
God will help you see it through my dear, I’m diabetic as well. Each day I just pray.
It’s not easy,in fact quite a hassel but you CAN live with it, please stick to good nutrition.
