Connecting my laptop to my TV.
Basically I want to get a cable to hook up my laptop to my TV and I am just looking for a bit of info on the best way to do this. The TV is brand new and has pretty much any type of input connections, my laptop has a 15 pin and an S-Video output connection.
I have been told that 15 pin cables are quite rare and to get the one the length I want will be quite difficult, the same person also told me that an S-Video connection isn’t a great way to go as it is a wide screen TV and apparently S-Vid connections do not support that formatting so the picture would get stretched, regardless of the resolution settings I put on the laptop which I wouldn’t have imagined is true.
Is there anybody who knows a bit about the topic and could tell me if this is true?

sorry friend! I know nothing! But is it your new tv you’re using?
I’ll invite some people.
It is indeedy. If you know of any of your friends to be into computers and what not it would be great if you invited them, I’m trying to find out from different sites as well.

Your S-Vdeo cable will do just fine. Find out from you tv documentation how to set your picture to automatic. It should do it all for you, by itself.
you might try calling a bestbuy or a circutcity and ask them. they know all sorts of things
That’s what I would have imagined, I’m pretty up-to-date on most aspects of technology but my mate in question generally knows more about these kind of things in particular and he seems quite confident that it wouldn’t work properly. How sure are you Thep?
I was also in a computer shop earlier and they were……far from helpful to put it nicely :)
or get a computer to tv imput box you can get them at radioshack for $40-$60
Just to make it more clear, My desktop is connected to a wide screen tv. The documentation tells me how to set up my conection.
The picture sits in the middle of the screen, with black on both sides. It automaticly adjusted to the right resolution.
Ah OK, that may have been what my friend was talking about. The black bit on both sides I mean, you are not able to set it up so that it takes up the whole TV but still looks right I’m guessing?
I have had it full screen as well, it does distort some, but it is better to let it set itself. You dont notice the black surounding on the sides.
It sets to the propper screen resolution for your computer.
I have mine set to 1028 x 768 pixels.
And do you use the TV as a second monitor or as your what? Basically I want to set up mine to use as a secondary monitor, I do not know if this would change things or not.
This should not change anything. If you have PC World where you live, pop in there. They have all the leads and expertise to help you set it all up. In other words, they will tell you all the things you will need, to be successful with the setup.
PC World was the exact shop I was in earlier, the people there didn’t have a clue :)
My problem won’t be setting it up, I just wanted to make sure that S-Video connections will support a wide screen picture. I’m going to see if I can get my hands on the 15 pin cable which I know supports wide screen picture and if I can’t find it I’ll get the S-Vid one and if it ain’t able to display things in widescreen format then it ain’t the end of the world. Thanks for your help thep, much appreciated :)

They never seem to know what they are doing, but then I guess they are really just sales people :). It was funny when I went to buy a laptop from there and knew more about it then the person there and they even told me something which is not true, go PC World!
Goodluck with the pin thing, I have never had the pleasure of having a TV big enough to make it worth connecting my laptop too so I can’t give any advice :(
You surprise me about PC World. 15 pin cables are available, or should be from the firm mentioned as are S-Video connections.
Good luck, with your new tv and comp.
Well it’s not the availability of 15 pins, it’s the availability of a 15 pin connection that’s a minimum of 3 metres long :)
Cool, thanks man, take it easy everybody :)

I feel the same way when I walk into a Sephora…
hehe, you broke the quote thing :P
Although, is Sephora and American place? I have not heard of it before..?
Actually if you ask them they will get you an extended cable - you can also get them from Maplins but they night need to be joined by a link but again if you do it right you will have a great picture. Thep is right - let the tv do the adjustments for you - Mas
The guy said they can’t get any longer cables, me gets the feeling he was a proper moron. Maybe I’ll go back up tomorrow and ask someone else who looks like they know what they are talking about about ordering in an extended cable or something. Thanks everyone :)

lol, it’s a makeup store. I always know more than the employees. I don’t understand all your computer talk and felt left out :(
*leaving now* Goodluck Roo!
Other thing that might help - when I found out my tv link was too short I wrote to Panasonic and they sent me one - free - by return of post - well I suppose they were still counting my money and a bit excited but you could give it a shot - Customer Service departments can do all sorts of things if you ask them nicely
Your other option of course is to be nice to your laptop people - you have no idea - they get abused all day and if you turn up and say Wow lurv my laptop can you help me - well it’s worth a shot.
One thing I will say - nothing works better than an old-fashioned polite letter to the Head of Customer Services - an email can get picked up by anyone but write it and post it and the world is your oyster - Good luck - Mas
Huh? How can 11811 help here? I’m somewhat confused.
And I don’t know what an Acer is, but I won’t have any issues setting it up if it is possible to do what I want with an S-Video connection. Believe it or not I am quite good with most things computer-like, I just have a very limited understanding of things along the line or various resolutions and what not.
Really? Are they not just for getting phone numbers for specific companies?
Getting somewhat off topic I know but I’m curious.
Nice one Ireland - I gave you a medal for that ingenuity - Regards Mas
Would an Adaptor work? To link two wires together, making a long one? Have you tried Radio Shack? Or Best Buy, they have the Geek Squad, and have helped me on many occasions. I wish I knew more, but yea, There are adaptors for everything now adays. Good Luck!
Awwwww you have a better tv than me:( I want my mtv! Someday:), I will hookup from across the room:)
I tried to connect my acer to my TV and the tv is a sony..they claim the TV is not compatible. The laptop has an F5 button to use it for a monitor. The computer people claim I’m missing something in the tv and the Acer people claim computers transmit in a different digital signal and the tv needs a converter. The cable thing is simple, I couldn’t get the TV to respond. Wish you luck:)
Oh yes I forgot..Acer wanted to sell me parts to turn my laptop into a TV and my Acer has a TV function, blue switch, but no parts in side. They claim it was an option and the buttons are there for me to add on parts. If you get a cable and it works great..if not I would be interested if you find a solution. I spent 3 weeks on this and found no answer other than to buy a new TV/monitor.
