life help: I’m starting from scratch, I’m going to live on my own. - Help.com

I’m starting from scratch, I’m going to live on my own.

I need to know everything possible for this. I’m 17, going on 18. I have no money and so many issues I can barely leave the house. But I’m at rock bottom, at 18 my supporting money ends. I’ll have to get a job…but I refuse to spend my hard-earned money on living in this hellhole. So please, I need as much information and even your own stories about when you moved out as possible.

start a budget. Know where every penny you make goes. This will help you plan and save your money.

I’m assuming you aren’t going to college or you are saving it for later in life. This is ok. I sounds like you need to get standing before you can concentrate on school, just make a promise to yourself that you will eventually.

Talk to alot of people, friends, professionals in your area. Ask what is the best job to get. Stay positive, and keep your friends close.

if you have any money left, or are continuing to get money until you turn 18, definitely start saving

you probably won’t have enough to get a place of your own, so ask some friends if you can stay with them until you have enough money.

but for right now, you definitely need to start searching for any potential jobs

If you have a place lined up all ready, that’s for the best. Like you said you really need to get your hands on a job. Retail, food service or even manual labor would be your best bet right out of high school. If you have any talents such as art, or any crafts you do, it might do you well to try to sell art or things you make to people. Once you’re 18 I think you can be a cab driver, it might be a rough position, but it’s steady pay and you can drive around your new area to get your berrings. I suggest living in an area with public transit and forget about a car for now because paying insurance, gas and car payments really should be the least thing you need to worry about. Focus on paying rent and buying food for now, eventually a phone and cable with internet, but your biggest priority should be shelter and food, just like in the good ol days..

I don’t really have many friends and no one to stay with. I have no money of my own (used to, long story). If I get a job now and a bank account when I am 18, and I save the money and get a loan (considering the only jobs I can get right now are minimum wage), would this be a good idea?

I have no means of financial help from family or friends and DON’T want it (I realize this is going to be hard).

At first you have to spend your money on “hellholes” b/c that’s were we all Start…then gradually move up…we all start with nothing, but it’s our job to turn it into something…and it’s a good thing you have so many issues (well not good, but useful thing) because now you’re a strong person and little stuff doesn’t break you…Good Luck!!

You won’t be able to get a loan at 18, you’re going to need someone to co-sign for you like a parent :\ I know for a fact however if you want a bank account you can sign up for a checking account at Bank of America for free, even do it online. The card will come in about 2 weeks, I did it.

Unless you are trying to pay college fees to get degrees, i wouldn’t recommend getting a loan. It bothers me that, how is it that you were not able to save any money in that hellhole? I mean, I would imagine that you are not paying any rent or living expenses. If you get your own place, with no real experience on renting, you might want to ask professional. You will have to pay not only rent, but electricity, water, and etc.
You said, you don’t have many friends, but you still do, even if they are few in numbers. Asking for help from friend is ideal, in my opinion.
If nothing else works, become a roommate. I bet there are plenty of young families, or immigrants around your area that can rent you a one room. You still have to pay, but don’t have to worry about where to send a bill to water company or electricity and it’s deadlines.
