My dad does NOT know how to handle our finances.
This is not a post asking for money, mind you.
If you’ve read my post “Am I Allowed To Hate Her?” then you know a little something about my financial situation, how my mom left the picture a few months ago, and with her went most of our (already shaky) monetary stability.
My mom was always the one who handled the bills. She made sure everything was paid on time, and if we didn’t have enough one month, she rationed the money so that everyone was generally happy till next month came and she could pay it all off.
Well, now that mother is gone, my father has control of the bank account, and he has NO IDEA what he’s doing. Last month, our first official month on our own, we went $300 into the overdraft protection of our bank account because he spent too much, went out to eat 2 or three times, bought $20 worth of beer every other night, and fed his smoking habit when needed. We stayed in the black just because we had about $500 in savings that he transferred over to the main account. He vowed that he wouldn’t do that again this month, that he’d be better and he’d control his spending. Well, of course, he isn’t and he’s pulling the same crap. He’s spending wildly, and we have no more savings to cover us if he spend over what we have again.
I need to take over the bank account, my grandmother thinks so and so do I. I’m 16 and I’ve taken classes on budgeting and personal finances. I’m perfectly capable of handling it, but chances are, he won’t let me.
Help? How do I make sure that we don’t end up homeless in the next few months? What can I do to take over the finances without my father getting mad and not letting me?
