My car payment is too high and I owe more than the car is worth…

I have 55 payments left! Like a fool, I fell for a sales pitch and got caught up in the excitement of the sale. How do I get rid of this car and find one with a lower payment?

Of COURSE you owe more than the car is worth! And that is why I don’t like to buy cars! My present car is 16 years old. It’s a Saab 900, and it’s still better than most of the cars coming off the assembly line. In any case, you’ll get soaked if you try to trade in this car. As soon as you drove it off the lot, it depreciated 15 - 20 percent! What you have to look at is total operating costs. I hope it is not a gas guzzler, because it looks like you’re going to be stuck with this car for nearly five years! You MIGHT be able to get a cheaper car, but don’t look for your payments to really go down very much. You’re “upside down” in industry parlance, meaning your car is worth less than what you owe on it. On the bright side: if it has a good warranty, you will have several–or more–years of relatively carefree driving. You may also just have a case of “buyer’s remorse,” which we all get after making a big decision like buying a car or a house. Why don’t you go for a drive somewhere and just enjoy it?
