I am writing a book right now and I was wondering does
writing short stories help to develop your writing skills when your not able to get to your main focus or would that just get in the way by taking your writing in a direction other than that which it should go. I just want to know if it would be a good idea or not. If you can think of any pros or cons go ahead and list them. I appreciate it.

Hi Cody! Wow, I applaud your efforts. And hope all goes well with your book.
I’m sure it’s always great to practice doing whatever it is you want to excel at, so writing short stories and the like is a great idea.
However, the authors that I’ve spoken with say if you’re writing a book…your first duty is TO FINISH IT! :)
I would suggest focusing on the one work until it’s done.
Keep me up to date! Can you tell us what it’s about?
Id say if your gunna work on other things be **** careful about it cus if they sweep you away its going to be real hard to get back to your main project, i learn that the hard way time and time again.

you really have not done much writing.the easy answer is yes, you need to learn to [paint a picture and practice is the only way you will get it
I have actually written quite a bit for school just not ever to this scale, but thanks for the advice.

I am not too worried about getting sidetracked. My neighbor is a retired high school English teacher. She saw a bit of my work and is now checking up on me to make sure that I continue. I ask this because sometimes I get stuck with gas station duty at the grocery store I work at. That is actually where I do most of my writing, but sometimes I forget to bring a book or notepad to write in so one so I’ll go inside and buy a 95 cent notepad and just start writing what ever kind of story comes to mind.
then by all means! write, write, write!!
any chance of me getting to read a Cody original?
HI Cody, I hope your well? Although I don’t know anything about writing a book or short stories,I have attempted it in a sense and I recently started writing short articles(my recent positive posts.)I certainly don’t think it could hurt.and that may be where you find your niche or better. What I’ve learned from success stories is we have to start somewhere and later we see the pieces of the puzzle fitting together.I could be wrong butI really don’t think ‘pros and cons’ fit into this situation.Maybe just ‘is it beneficial or not’ is more like it.Good LUck my friend :D
Making short storys will help you to get better at writing right? So then write! Its a good thing, and you gotta post them so we can read them okay? I would like very much to read your storys Cody. Good Luck! :D
Whacha think of a story?
I think I will try to post a short story or two. Unfortunately, school starts again today for me so I won’t be able to write as much, but I will try to get some up here.
I know what you mean. I never payed attention there, I always drew or read. The teachers didnt mind much, because that ment I wasnt asleep and snoring. XD
I think that short stories are far more difficult to write than long ones, i´m sure that any experienced writer will tell you just the same. The fact of the matter is that any writing will help develop skills so keep on keeping on!!
I am also dabbeling at writing short stories. I have found that a good way to get feed back is to read them out to an audience at an “Open Mike”.
I can’t speak in front of an audience. I will trip and fall and make a fool of myself.
…go to like some beatnik coffee shop where they do “readings”
and if you wear sunglasses they can’t see you.
We do not have any coffee shops like that around where I am. Even if I did attempt it I would trip wile sitting down. Not easy, but I have done it before.
The first few times I tryed public speaking, I screwed up big time. However at an open mike or similar venue, many of the people there are also reading their work. This type of audience understands and they will be speaking also. Try it again.
I’ve writen and performed standup comedy and history lectures.
Try this: Just before you speak think this “If nobody gets up and speaks this would be a very silly event. Just a bunch of people sitting in a room, all facing the same direction.” or you can think of all the times you have attended lectures or shows and then think “Now it’s my turn.”

written any good short stories lately?
I have started one about a wolf that goes into a small town. I lost the first version and am rewriting it.

I still am unable to think of a place like that.

Ask a teacher at your school about organizing such an event at the school. You can have it in the evening and invite in people and other writers from outside the school.
