I’m looking to move to the UK in the next year or so.
Can anyone recommend which smallish town/city I should look at? I’m looking for a moderate cost of living, educational opportunities, but a semi-rural area.

England is the most probable, but we are considering the others.
Ballymena in Northern Ireland, Burgess Hill and Hayward’s Heath in England.
Southern England is pretty exspensive as compared to the North. I’d recommend moving to a town/City myself. The cost of living will be higher but as a country fella myself, I can say that Villages tend to be far more insular and less welcoming to strangers. Personally, I’d say your best bet would be in the Newcastle/ Northumberland area
The Welsh can be pretty unfriendly to no welsh too! I think some of the bigger citys are a bit more friendly and you get a lot more for your money. I would say the North of england is a much nicer place than the South but probably just because i live in the South. The only place i would say is a nice up and coming place with plenty of jobs is Milton Keynes. You still get semi-rural but you have a small centre thats like a city. Plus you can hop on the train and get to London in 1 or 2 hours, depending on English trains!
Where are you moving from?
You must be looking for more than “moderate cost of living, educational opportunities, but a semi-rural area”
I’d have to agree with Davey here. As a Welshman myself, We are pretty insular. I’m a true Cymro but some of the locals around here take it too far, Wales has its own language and culture but sadly it is often used as an excuse to attack people who don’t belong to that culture. I’d not consider wales if I were you. I’d try England personally
Im glad i didnt get abuse for saying that then. I have had a few strange looks in shops and pubs when you reveal your english accent. My relatives in Wales are always really nice though. I guess everywhere has places where you get it though.
pompey its grate u got the dockyard and everythink n the house prices r cheap n pompey fc (our football club) is the best wooop, hey hey we won the FA cup
Im sure thats all true apart from “pompey fc (our football club) is the best wooop” :P It might be an idea to say that pompey is Portsmouth!

Why would you want to move to the UK - the schools are failing, teenagers are being knifed to death on a daily basis, fuel prices are set to rocket by another 45%?Do you really have to move here - everyone else is trying to leave - Mas
u make us sound like a bunch of yobs lmao
lol ok, look up the net to see where has a low crime rate and low prices, there’s guaranteed to be a survey somewhere.
Surrey, close to London I would say. People are really friendly there, there are tons of great schools, university, shops, small town atmosphere and great pubs. :-) Farnham is good too.
I support a worse team than Portsmouth, but that still doesnt mean they are good :P
Surrey is really exspensive!
Everything is expensive these days everywhere in the world. There is no such place as these people are really looking for in the UK, or any western countries for that matter. Depends where these folks are coming from and how much are they planning to invest. What part of the world are you planning to move to UK?
That is very strange, mind you when I was there, I was only a turist and everything I saw and experienced was positive. Of course, it is different when you live there like mas1s. Thank you for the enlightenment friend. So I think people who live in the UK should respond to your question Anon. When I was there in a University exchange program doing my masters, I experienced only good things, nothing like small town atmosphere, or brain cell atmosphere and I loved the pubs. I am talking about nice people.
