well all I gotta say is Study study study. practice makes perfect…it’s good that you want to be one of the best, but I think you’re only hurting yourself by comparing yourself with this other girl. Remember, you’re there to learn, not be the best. Good luck!

p.s. here’s a quote for you:
“Shoot for the moon, and even if you miss, you’ll land amoung the stars”

Oh goodness…please tell me you’re not playing the GPA game to get valedictorian. Learn for the sake of learning…that’s seriously how you get ahead. People who do well in school, love it, they go the extra mile not because they think it’ll get them ahead…at least for the people I talk to it’s because they just wanted to learn more about the subject. If that’s why you’re doing it then just work hard, it’ll pay off. It did for me.

There will always be someone better than you-once you accept this you will succeed. (Doesn’t mean to let down on the competition whatsoever)

I think you need to be a little less concerned about what is going on with the other girl. Concentrate on your studies and count your blessings. You know that there will always be someone with whom you can compare yourself unfavorably. Besides, there are so many ways to make your mark in society. Being the most charitable or the least likely to judge others based on their appearance rather than the quality of their character, may be a more important goal than being the person with the highest score in English.

I think somewhere up there you asked how to improve at English. I would suggest studying more difficult spelling words - possibly using a “Vocabulary Builder” which helps you associate the roots of words and thus increasing your vocabulary by ten or so words at a time.

Also, you can improve your writing by reading classical literature, well-written essays and novels, or books on style. I would suggest “The Elements of Style” by Strunk & White.

As for the popularity/jealousy thing: Try spending time with people who like you for who you are, not who you wish you could be. It will help you gain more confidence, and everyone loves people with confidence.

Whatever they have told you, school isn’t a competition. Life isn’t a competition. If you want to do well in your studies, great, but don’t judge yopur own performance by what other people do. If you really think this other girl might be better in English than you are, or have a better study method, why not ask her to study together? You might learn something from her, or you might find out she’s doing the same things you do. Either way, getting your focus away from the competition and back on the studies will improve your results.
