From the computer than does connect to the router, pull up the configuration system. They tend to be html based these days, so pop 192.168.0.1 (or whatever ip your router is at) into your web browser.

See if your router knows its connected to a second machine. If it doesn’t see it, the router may be the problem. If it does, the computer is more likely.

Make sure your router is set to filter by MAC and that it is set to allow at least two connections.

You have to open network places and setup a home or small office network. Follow the directions when setting up your pc network, then both pc’s will connect through the router. If you need more help just ask. Hope this helps :-)

Oh yes, I rather assumed you were referring to a wired network. If you’re talking about a wireless network, instead, also make sure your security settings match.

And don’t bother with the windows networking wizards, they just make a mess of everything.

ok… ok my dell computer was hooked up to the router then i got a gateway today so i moved the dell to a different area i couldnt use the same cord (im not using wireless) so i had to use a different one. I know the dell did work before i put the gateway in its place. Maybe io need a different cord to go from the computer to the router.. im not sure where this cord came from for all i know it could be a phone cord) could that be my problem?

If its a phone cord it will not work, you need a internet cable.

I didn’t even think of that. Yeah, if the cord your using is only a 2 or 4 pin phone cord, its not going to work. Ethernet cables are 8 pin. You should be able to tell the difference easily once you unplug it.

On the other hand, If you’ve got another short ethernet cable, try moving the other computer close enough to use it and see if it works.
