computer help: Does anyone know a good antivirus program that is compatible with my Windows 2000 operating system? - Help.com

Does anyone know a good antivirus program that is compatible with my Windows 2000 operating system?

I tried Norton, but their products need a special installation for a 2005 version and they want an extra fee to help me install it. The price for one year will be around $80.00, which seems high to me. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

You can try AVG’s Free Edition. I’m not sure how it works with 2000, but it’s worth a shot. www.avg.com You can just download it from there or search AVG Free edition at download.com

There’s very few solid ones for 2000, windows 2000 is possibly one of the most virus ridden operating systems out there. Fun fact: hackers were writing viruses for it before it had actually been released.

Oh dear! That is not good news about the hackers and Windows 2000. Should I just get a new operating system and call it a day? I say that as though I would know how to go about doing that. Ha!
Thank you sbvchaser and Fever Dream. I do appreciate the help. I will try to work up the courage to try setting up AVG’s free edition.
I have been using Norton for all these years and this is the first problem that I have encountered. I thought that I would just be able to renew my subscription the way I always have. Do you think that $80.00 is too much to pay? If there are not many left that are compatible, maybe it is not too much after all.

Let’s see…Mostly e-mail and web searches. Every once in a while, I do buy something on eBay. I have a few documents saved and some photos. I don’t play games or send FAXs.

You should try switching to OSX or linux if you’re not running too many programs

If I switch to one of those, will I be able to download an antivirus system as well?

Not too many people write viruses for linux and OSX, Most of the time the system themselves will come with the best anti virus system for it.

ack! you don’t sounds too computer savvy (no offence) so stay away from linux and OSX - although they are right in that not many people write virus’ for those operating systems, its because they are “advanced” - OS’s - primarilly used by those self same people who write the virus’s in the first place (thus the old maxim - don’t **** where you eat!)

AVG is regarded as one of the better ones about, although i have heard that Avira is not too bad (although i personally use AVG - avira is a HORRIBLE system to un-install!)

If you do decide to get windows XP (for the love of god, stay away from vista for now! - its got more holes in it than gorden brown’s reputation!) - you want to get a “update” cd - but don’t spend too much on it, as if your comp was shipped with 2000, its possibly cheaper to get a 2nd hand comp with XP on it, and still its a upgrade from your comp! - (make sure you check this though)

Anyway, ironicly, i would say stick with 2000 - people say about the holes in it, but Service Pack 4 (which you should have) patched almost all of them! - so its a perfectly reliable system nowadays! -

so my advice - stick with that comp until you decide to upgrade the entire machine!

Oh, and make sure you have spybot search and destroy - you main nightmare will be malware/keyloggers - programs which record passwords etc… - spybot helps stop these… (make sure you tick the “install teatimer” button when installing it - its also freeware :D - but give a donation if you can - bloke does superb work on it

You are so right. I know very little about how computers work. It is because when I was your age, they had not been invented. That’s no joke. My generation did not even have the advantage of having calculators when we were in school. We actually did count on our fingers. Ha! I do love computers, though.

I am going to take your advice and keep 2000 on my CPU. My computer gets automatic Microsoft updates. How can I check to see if I already have Service Pack 4? I have a Spybot icon on my desk top because we used it once when we had a nasty virus to kill. Can I just click on that icon and run it?

Unfortunately, I did not have the advantage of your advice last year when I purchased a laptop with Vista already installed. My needs are simple, so perhaps I will not have the problems that other users have encountered. I was told that I didn’t need to subscribe to an antivirus program because of the many protections that were built in to the system. It also came with McAfee, which has been reminding me to renew my subsctiption. Should I just go ahead and get AVG for the laptop, too?

Oh, the questions are endless. And, I do not wish to wear you out with them. So, I thank you for helping me. I am pretty sure that I am not the only old person who has been enlightened by your suggestions. I look forward to your reply.

feel free to ask away! - oh, and i’m well beyond my teens myself… - i was using computers back in the day of the spectrum 48k, and acorn electron (granted, it sounds like you are still older than me, but please don’t think of me as a 14 yr old geek! :P)

right - to the questions…

You will find if you have SP4 by - go to START > CONTROL PANEL > SYSTEM
the screen that comes up will have something along the lines of “microsoft windows 2000 Service Pack 4″

if you don’t have it - post here, and i’ll find you a link - although googling it will probably work :P

spybot - unfortunately it lacks a self-updating routine - so yep, you need to double click it, go to updates, download the latest updates, and then run it… - that will (hopefully!) help

and last of all, AVG vs McAffe - you will almost certainly find that McAffee has expired, since all they give you is a 30 or 60 day trial run, then it sits there taking up memory, and twidling its diodes! - so, you would really want to un-install it, and load up AVG there… - also, you possibly want to get a firewall and spybot for that one too - for a firewall, download a bit of software called ZoneAlarm (and its free for personal users) - that one works well :)

oh, and no probs for helping :) - makes me feel like a useful geek :P

good luck, and post here again with any more questions :)

I printed the information you so kindly supplied and showed it to my husband. His face brightened up right away. He has been feeling a bit neglected while I have been “helping” people on this website. Now we know how to solve a problem that has had us worried for a long, long time. You are indeed, a useful geek! Thank you, thank you, thank you. We feel you are more than slightly unique. You are super helpful and totally unique.
