Charity Job help

Quick one here - basicaly I’m a recent graduate and it’s always been my dream to work in the charity secton - I’m not motivated by money especialy and would rather earn less doing a job I like than earn loads doing a job I couldn’t reconcile with my concience for example. I have tried- hard to find a position in a charity - especialy the mental health charities which I am particaurly passionate about though I would also willingly work in any charity that provides some level of social concience - working with disadvantaged childeren. I live in the UK and am willing and able to relocate pretty much anywhere within the south. Does anyone have any experiance with getting such a job, or know any companies/orgonisations that I should approach? Any help appreciated!

How would you feel about working as a fundraiser?

Fundraising would be ok I guess - but as a rule I wouldn’t want to be one of those people standing in the streets with clipboards - and I think most fundraising is contracted out to private companies nowdays.

It is, but there are also organisations that train there own fundraisers. I worked as one for a while, it’s a very tough job but I would imagine it’s a great thing to have on your CV for trying to get your foot in the door for a charitable organisation. Plus you get to meet a lot of really fantastic people, whether your working for a private company or not :)

Social Conscience means righting some of the basic injustices that occur within our societies. For example the lack of understanding and prejudice againgst certain groups, poor pay and working conditions for some, lack of visibility/care for disadvantaged members of society. While I am a democratic socialist and would, idealy like to see the kind of society where such injustices and inequalities are evened out more or less I am also a realist and realise that I have to work with what I have - which is why I would like to work in such a sector

True - which is why I wouldn’t mind working for an orgonisation that campaigns to raise people’s awareness of such conditions, and petitions governments and businesses about such things.

Yeah - any advice would be a lot of help - and I understand how professional charities have to be nowdays - mainly I just want a job in charity - would rather feel like I’m doing well for others if you know what I mean. I would be grateful of any advice you can give me Mas, of course! Basicaly I’m looking at the Kent/Sussex area… Had a fair bit of office and admin experiance with a variety of different roles - had experiance working with disadvanteged childeren - all that. Realy I’m just trying to find a way into a job I know I would put 100% into - and get a lot out of I guess.

No - I’m not working right now - just graduated -so I’m looking. Had to leave a pretty good part time job unfortunately working for my mate’s business, but the hours couldn’t reasonably be increased. Oh - and thankyou littlenick - I’ll run some searches for both those orgonisations

Thanks Mas - and yeah - have been doing a fair bit of research myself on the various charities and such. And yeah - part of the reason I want to work with Mind or something in that feild is because they are so underfunded. That and I know a fair bit of background on the stuff. And thanks for mentioning the Local Govermment thing - I hadn’t thought of that!

Knowing what you want = massively employable. Good luck.

Tangent. Have you thought about taking an overseas voluntary position working for an NGO that fits with your ethics. I know UK govt offers them but can’t recal the name.

Its win/win for you and them.
