Has anyone here attended Australian universities?

I, for reasons that are kind of hard to explain, really want to go to school in Australia, but some one told me that for some unspecified reason all Australian schools suck and all Australians go to the US for college. Which seems a little…unrealistic. I’ve looked up information on like, ANU and University of Sydney, and they certainly look good. What’s you guys opinions?

Ummm noo Australian Universities do not suck, that’s why we have so many international and exchange students studying here. And I’ve never heard of that whole Australians going to study in the US??

I go to University of Technology Sydney (UTS)- that’s near University of Sydney (USSYD). It’s a pretty good university. The top four universities in Sydney would probably be University of New South Wales (UNSW), USYD, UTS and Macquarie University. ANU hmm that’s far from Sydney but its a really good university to go to.

But yeahh just letting you know that everyone who goes to USYD are nerds, theyre really smart and all that but theyre just too competitive. UNSW is a cool university and UTS is very convenient if you don’t live near the city plus it’s in the city so after lectures there is so much things to entertain you.

If youre deciding between uni’s then i recommend UTS (im biased of course!) or UNSW

Thanks so much. I thought that the universities sucking thing was complete BS, but it was coming from my step mother, who has a lot of influence on my father, who, you know, plays a key part in the financial side of the venture.

Yeah, well, I’m nerdy, but sort of in the relaxed uncompetitive way. This whole “go to Australian university” think started as a fantasy when I was 13, just getting as far away as possible, but now I’m just starting to look at it as a serious thing. I don’t plan on living my adult life in the US, so I don’t see any point in staying here for higher education.

And I’ve tried looking up stuff on the application process, but I haven’t found much useful stuff. Just, out of curiosity, is the application process like a lot of European and Japanese school where they tend to only look at grades and test scores, or like US schools where they look at extra curricular activities and hobbies?

(I’m not going to be applying for actually a couple years, and just wondering how to prep for all this)

Yeahhh in the application process they actually look at your grades. Depending how well you go depends on what you can apply for. However, there are some courses which are not in demand and that are easier to get into.

I’m not sure if you’re going to plan to study here as an international student or an exchange student, but i do know that it is easier to get into whatever course you want to do if you are an international student as the government gives them admission priorities as they pay like around three times as much as domestic (australian students) e.g. if you apply as an international student the required UAI (admission rank) is 89, but if youre a domestic student then the UAI is 94. So you’re lucky because you can pretty much get into almost anything you want if you’re an international student.

Also, different universities have different grade admission requirements:
For example, (international student requirements)
Commerce at USYD requires a UAI (ranking) of around 89.
Commerce at UNSW requires a UAI of 90
Business at UTS requires a UAI of around 84

Well yeahh good luck and i’m sure that when you do come here you’ll enjoy it

Well, US schools do look at grades, but then they want like, well rounded people. Which can make prepping for colleges a complicated experience.

I’m assuming those numbers correspond to percentage averages? Cool. I think my average last year was 89 or so, depending on whether or not you factored in art. (Yes, my lowest grade was in art. I am that awesome.)

Thanks for looking that up for me! You’ve been really helpful!

hehehe no problem =]

yeahh btw the UAI is not a percentage average, its a ranking, students againsts students. so they take into account all your marks and then give you a ranking. but yeahh your marks should correspond approximately to your ranking anyways

UTS is ****. The four best are ANU, Melbourne Uni, USyd and UNSW. Look at the time ranking
