hi my name is sydney i bought a 7year old QH mare a

couple of months ago and i was told she couldnt have a baby because she was intentionally breed before and didnt take and she had been with a 2year old mustang stud for couple of years because her last owner thought she couldnt be breed but anyway, to me that was good because i wanted to rodeo. so i bought her and brought her home. once she was settled in for a while i started riding her and was training her to barrel race and she would keep getting really pushy and not wanting to do as i asked her and i went to feed her a couple of days ago and she had a little surprise, it was a little colt and just the day before i was riding her and i felt really bad and i was not expecting it at all she didnt look pregnant at all the day before and she doesnt look all that different now so now i have another horse to take care of ohh joy but he is cute…and the big point of me posting this was to figure out how long should i wait to ride her again??after the colt is weaned was my guess but please help me figure this out!!!??? i have been on alot of websites and none can tell me this and if you have any other info for me that i should know of please help i am very lost…

You can ride her right away. Horses are built to drop a foal and then move on with thier herd. You will need to take the foal along the first month or so or stay close by (they need to nurse often early on). After that you can take normal rides.

This has happned to me to .I had a Horse (Trotter) and i kept training her ,not knowing she had a thing going with my 18 Month old Stallion.I really worked her hard that Day and in the night she dropped a young Foal.I felt bad and angry with myself that i worked her and that i never took notice that she was pregnant….But she was OK the only thing was she didnt want to feed it,but that is another story…

Horses are not like people and can start work very soon, it will be harder on the foal than on the mare, just watch out when he starts to get playful, it hurts to have a little horse jump on your leg when you are riding mom. I would just say to keep an eye on her and the foal to make sure they are staying healthy, remember she needs more nutrients the more he sucks out of her (literally from nursing) so adding work on top of that means even more calories. Have fun with your little guy, raising foals is a lot of fun!!!

I would also make sure the foal isnt going to get worked to hard trying to fallow mom,if he/she is watching you more than running after you ,you should be ok,if its trying to keep up my vet said 20 min or so and let it rest.Have fun.
