According to www.englishdaily626.com, it comes from the fact that “when apes are given a bunch of bananas, they eat them with tremendous enthusiasm, as though they’ve lost their minds.”

I don’t know if this is true, but after reading this question, I was intrigued enough to Google it a little and found that etymology.
