Did I talk too much?

Hey, I sent an email to someone else in my boy scout troop about leadership in the troop, and I was wondering if I spoke too much during the email. What is your immeadiate reaction to this email and response?

Hey ____,

I hope you’re having a nice summer. I just got back from [boy scout camp] where I talked with [the troop scout master] about leadership in the troop. I told him I asked you to be scribe, which he was hesitant about mostly because he didn’t know what rank you were. Since it’s been a while since you were in my patrol, what rank are you now? Didn’t I help give your board of review for something? What was it for? I can’t remember if it was 1st or 2nd class. It’s no big deal if it doesn’t work out; I can find someone else to be scribe or even do the position again myself if it comes down to that. Also, don’t be afraid to tell me you’d rather not have a leadership position or you’d rather something other than scribe, now would be the time to tell me.

Also, I figured I’d give you a fair warning about patrols for next year, the patrol leaders and I went over a list of all the scouts and re organized patrols. You’re in [some kid]’s Patrol, along with [_____], [_____], [____] and [____]. [Your best friend] is in [some other kid]’s patrol, and [your other friend] requested that you, [your best friend], and him were in seperate patrols so there wouldn’t be any ‘distractions’ (not that I don’t agree with that). I’m just saying next year might be different because of how the groups are structured, but it’s not too late to change things. I’ll try and ‘adjust’ patrols if you want me too, and I’ll do what I can as SPL to tweak things in your favor. Just tell me what you want and I’ll try to get it for you.

But don’t tell anyone I’m doing this for you, then I’ll have to do it for everyone.

Enjoy your summer,

[me]

I thought your e-mail read very well. Just because he didn’t put time into an equal length of reply, doesn’t mean you said to much. More he said too little. But the essentials are there, and he appreiciates you.

So I don’t see a problem, you did perfectly well based on those 2 e-mails. Don’t worry about it =)

Yeah, but do you think we’re friends? Does it come across as a buisiness letter or a personal letter? Does it seem like he’s just being polite? Maybe he’s just being formal? Or is he talking sincerely?

You sent the first email not the second, right?

If you sent the first:

Yes, you talked too much. When you’re leading a group, it’s good to show some consideration, but this is way too much. It’s a rule of management that you should be a respected leader first and a friend second. People will learn they can confide in you over time.

You could have cut out these lines:
“It’s no big deal if it doesn’t work out; I can find someone else to be scribe or even do the position again myself if it comes down to that. Also, don’t be afraid to tell me you’d rather not have a leadership position or you’d rather something other than scribe, now would be the time to tell me.”

“I’m just saying next year might be different because of how the groups are structured, but it’s not too late to change things. I’ll try and ‘adjust’ patrols if you want me too, and I’ll do what I can as SPL to tweak things in your favor. Just tell me what you want and I’ll try to get it for you.

But don’t tell anyone I’m doing this for you, then I’ll have to do it for everyone.”

The response, incidentally, is perfect.

The best book about this is called Becoming a Manager by a Harvard professor named Linda Hill.

It seems you worry too much! very natral, and I am not gonna judge you on it of course. Not least because they are all questions I would ask myself!

Treat him as a friend when you see him, and I am sure you will be friends. It did come across as a business later, but an informal one. It needed to since you were discussing the business of scout patrols and such. You added enough so it came off friendly though!
As for the other questions, its impossible to tell just from an e-mail. He might have a million reasons for a short reply. You can’t really second guess him.

My sum up is: The e-mail was friendly, and the guy did respond to what you asked him too. So you didn’t do anything wrong in my book, and he didn’t leave you anything to worry about. You did fine!
