My son ran up a huge credit card debt without my knowledge.

I cannot afford to pay it off and if I make minimum payments it would take me a lifetime to clear it. How can I get it cleared off?

His card I assume. His responsibility, should not be your problem.

ok, here’s my two cents for what it’s worth. (as a mom) if he’s 18 and it’s his debt, it’s his responsibility. From what you posted, it sounds like he ran up YOUR card. If he wasn’t an authorized user on your accountand is atleast 18, tell your credit card company, as that is identity theft. Tell him that if he doesn;t want to be arrested, he’ll pay you back (with all the interest) or go to jail. If for some reason it was your card and he is underage, it is your responsibility, but you have just inherited a personal cleaning lady/errand runner/lawnmower/grocery hauler/personal slave until it’s paid off.

it’s tough love, but this kind of offense is truly serious enough to warrant it.

he needs to consolidate his debts

Credit card debt consolidation also enables you to save on bill paying time; you just have to make a payment once a month. Just in case you find the rates of the consolidation loan too high, then you can utilize the money from your life insurance policy to keep credit card debt at bay. The most sensible modus operandi is to avoid using a credit card, which is already in the red.

We can help in getting the rates reduced or even settle with the card company.
