How does HTML Newsletters in Email work?
I have created a newsletter in HTML with images that I want to download ONLY when the recipient chooses to download the images (hence, keeping their email size to a minimum upon downloading from their ISP). The images are located on my website, in an image directory under my root website directory.
You know the kind … when you’re in outlook and you get an email with red check boxes and a message from outlook that says “Right click to download images. To help protect your privacy Outlook has prevented automatic download of images from the internet.”
I’ve found that I can create the web page in either Dreamweaver or one of the Microsoft Office products, reference the images from my website, then insert the file in Outlook (using MS Word) as “Insert File” -> and insert as text. However, when I do this the images are immediately resolved in the email, rather than just their location referenced. Sending the email the recipient also immediately sees the images, thereby increasing their email size from 10KB to a whopping 300KB!
I must be doing something wrong - or not understanding how Outlook or other email systems work. Can someone help shed some light - in broad strokes - how newsletters with references for images are emailed?
Thanks!
