Your own memory bank can be a good place to start. Do you have anything from you past you want to write about or even expand on? Sometimes you can start with one thing and weave a tale out of it through exaggeration …kind of like that game where you pass a secret around a room and it becomes distorted by the time it reaches the last person.

You also might try reading a book of short stories by a particular author. A compilation of works by different authors on a particular theme also can be inspirational… or you might just check out BD’s post above. :))

google “short story prompts”. You’ll find a multitude of pages dedicated to just this…

I’ve also found photographs to be good starting points for stories. Quotes- a productive writing exercise I did once was to have a friend throw one line quotes at me, and I would write at least a few sentences worth of story based on whatever ideas that quote gave me.
