A word on safety and security.
As some of you may know I’m the site admin and developer. I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know some of you, but I’ve been mostly behind the scenes. I thought I would take the chance to reintroduce myself and remind you — the help.com users — about being secure and safe while on this site and others.
As you all know the internet is a big scary place and no one really knows anyone else (unless they know them in real life).
There have been some recent events that reminded us of this, and without going into detail I would like to bring up a few guidelines.
1) Do not share your personal contact information with users, especially new users. This include email, MSN, AIM … etc
2) Please report any abusive or threatening behavior to the site immediately. If a moderator doesn’t respond quickly, escalate by shouting to me directly, and I will respond.
The site chat is there for a reason — to provide a safe and open place for users to chat. Do not be tempted to chat with NEW and UNKNOWN users off-site via MSN, AOL…etc
Thanks.

Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
Are you looking for answers about problems with your AOL service?
I’d like to recommend that you ask AOL directly since they are best suited to help you.
For AOL support, you can visit the AOL support site or even call them at an AOL toll free number.
Note: I’m a robot that the Help.com staff created. If this response is in error, I apologize, please ignore it.
Very wise advice. But remember that most people accidently post their personal information because they get overconfident at times.
You also forgot to mention to not share self information like credit card numbers and social security numbers.
Thank you for addressing this issue. There are so many people here who don’t take their privacy seriously.

Yup especially the last 2 parts.
I actually don’t feel very safe around anyone who won’t tell me their social security and credit-card numbers. What exactly are they trying to hide? And how could they be tracked down if they do something bad?
Thanks Yourabi.
And shouts aren’t private people!!!!
Anyone can read them.
So don’t think you’re sending a private message to someone with your contact info through a shout. You’re really sending it to every single person that will ever visit this site.
You’ve got everything you need here for communication kids - forum, chat room, and shouts. You don’t need to give anyone further ways to contact you.

Exactly, why do you think they’re called shouts? Others can “hear” them.
Good point Chameleon.
Thanks for the post Yourabi.
just the kind of post we needed after that pedophile guy was b&.
no sarcasm.
a lot of people look at posts by intelligent people whom ARE NOT admins/mods and are like “whatever! this guys isnt going to keep me from talking with this other guy.”
then they see mods and admins post it and take it more to heart.
this is a very important post for the new guys especially!
like my friend who just started to use the glorious powers of the internets for the first time and gave a stalking pedophile his address and other information because he didn’t think stuff like this happened.
listen up! newcomers of the internet! **** HAPPENS!

Help.com has a feature of sharing email with others. Some people open their email to everyone they “friend”. I recommend only opening email to people you have known for some time, and use an email address that doesn’t reveal your actual name.
Thanks for posting this! I’m totally going to follow these guidelines now and attempt to not be naive.
Too late Singer. You used your first, middle and last names as your user name.
Admin-sama.
:)
Is it possible, for you to track down a person who is harmful to others on this sit (such as a pedophile)… to track down their IP address and alert that athourities?

We’ll, I’m off for the night.. *cough* Morning.. 1:30am *cough* this site is so addicting.
I don;t really still understand the concept of being Rick Roll’d still… but.
:DD
Enjoy for all. (who have computer && Printer issues). ;D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mwjU3H…
lol rick roll.
rick rolling is when someone posts a link, stating it is one thing, but instead, they get a video or clip of rick astley’s “Never gonna give you up.”
it is a form of online deception game that spawned from some popular image board sites with other memes like LOL cats and such.
it is just ment to trick people. nothing much else
often times, the page will use javascript, ajax, or vbscript to bounce around and or be really annoying.
if you have firefox and the add on noscript however, they dont work on you.
i highly suggest it, noscript stops viruses as well.

It’s their imaginations. Or possibly hallucinations.

I do use Firefox but not sure if I have that add-on. Will check it out, thanks.

You can be tracked down by your name. Not a lot of people are willing to give out their social security or credit-card numbers because of IDENTITY THEFT.
He speaketh the trutheth, I’ve seen countless predators in the chat here, and seen them successfully get msn/aim/icq/skype from young people. Most of these predators are slyer then a troll, and rarely say or do anything inappropriate on the site itself.
YOUr the boss lol, Thanks :)
thank you and nice of you adressing us …
Duly noted. I will change my name.
Yup coolcool I do that safety stuff anyway.
I mean lots of people on help know my email, but hey, I have known them all for quite a while.
I don’t get what’s wrong with revealing your first name to people on the site though.
Although personally I would rather mine wasn’t on this site, my friends know it like I have told them through email. There are lots of people who share your name, most probably. My name isn’t exactly common, especially the spelling, yet there are at least 2 other people on facebook who have my first and last name spelt that way.
I know what Yourabis name means!
Rock on lol
Nice to see the admin once in a while. This is good advice that he has given and we should take heed. Yourabi, thank you;to the rest of us, lets get back out there helping people and keep this in mind.
Thank you for looking out for us:) Trust is a mixed bag on the internet. Maybe there is something to say about “The eyes being a window to the soul”? On the internet we must trust what we read, and have our own rules to protect, these rules also limit, our internet relationships are also limitted by the rules:( Be safe, be careful, but how far does fear go? It’s a cold world when fear rules the planet.
SoulRising, I think you just have to have a balance between fearful and fearless. Being aware that there are dangers out there will prevent bad things from happening, safety first and then let your hair down.

And thanx for the info. We should invite all of our friends to see this all!

Hello Yourabi. Maybe it would help if you explained HOW an email address can get you in trouble. HOW do predators track you down through an email?
My questions show I don’t really understand the workings of the internet (it’s really a series of tubes, right?). :)
Nice to meet you Yourabi. Thank You for the post. Very Good Advice.

Thanks for the informative posts. Hope everyone stays safe! It’s sometimes hard to imagine that there are people who would harm us. Let us enjoy the good while avoiding the bad! ;-)
Thanks for the invite. Keep all in mind. :-)
oh no! some users on here have my home address AND real NAME! arghhhhhhhhh what am i gonna do!
jk jk, its all good, i only give out details to people i have good vibes for and its worked every day till now, i think the problem is when you give it out willy nilly
Thanks so much. I truly belive you must take care with yourself. There are Great Whites out there!
Thanks for the advice, Yourabi, and thanks for admining and developing such a great site. I’m gon b way more careful.

okay! thanks for the reminder =D
i always report someone if i think they’re being retarded
thanks for the post yourabi.
well I really don’t get.I wish someone would explain it to me.
So a teenager gives their e-mail address to someone.
And that someone is a pedophile.
Surely teenagers these days know enough to recognize the expression
“do you want a candy”….
haven’t we all been told not to accept candies from strangers.
The Internet is all strangers. Even if you think you know them
it might not be them. We can’t hear their voice. Only what they print.
So what is the danger??
I get the message. I am sure that we have to be ever vigilant, but wouldn’t it be nice if we could all just take care of each other? I can’t stand to think that there are so many bad guys around. If anyone here ever sees me slipping up on the security rules, will you please let me know? I may tend to be a bit too open while I am trying to be helpful.
i actually think the threat is overstated so many times too, the people who need to be protected are children and teens and they should be supervised by their parents and/or told the dangers of being online and failing that they cant ignore all the warnings you get on the actual internet itself, i give out details to people i feel i can trust with it, not on the first meeting of course but if i felt so inclined, i would, adults should know better and if they dont, there is nothing you can do about it, i think encouraging everyone to use their common sense is good here too, its not the shark infested pit its made out to be, there are millions of people that mean no harm and are just like you and me.. just make sure you dont irresponsibly give your information out and be guarded even on websites like this but dont let that spoil the chance of a good friendship developing when it presents itself, i just had to say this because always the negative side is given and there is a positive side to this matter
cheers yourabi. words of wisdom we should all abide. how much do you get paid for this gig anyways and how did you come by it?
thanks yourabi, if u dont mind me attempting to do so, i will add you as my friend and u can accept?
so if i experience any difficulties i will find it easier to contact you. thanks
