What should I do with my life?

Right now I work as a research assistant in anthropology which I have a BA in. I’ve since realized I’m not suited for the field. It’s boring and dull and too political and competitive for me. I’ve been thinking that I want to do something more practical like nursing or teaching or more thought provoking like engineering or physics. I’ve also always had a dream to join the Peace Corps, but prior to now I felt like I couldn’t leave my best friend. She died in June from cancer.

So now I feel like I can’t stay where I am, because it’s completely unsatisfying, but my interests and wants are all over the board. Is there anyone out ther who loves what they do?

I have just trained to be be a teacher and I love it. I was one of the youngest trainees on my course (staight from uni). This made me realise that it is never too late. Many of the people I studied with had had careers in banking, sales, military etc…. and all their experiences strengthened their characters. What I am trying to say is to follow your dreams, if you choose a career and later change your mind, it is never too late to retrain. The people with experience were the best on the course!!! Go with your heart.

I went through a similar thing. Entered grad school right after my BSc and found that it wasn’t for me. I quit, felt quite depressed about it, took some time off to go travelling and work abroad, and returned to school a few years later in a new field that I love and feels more practical to me (Law).
So maybe take some time off school. Go see some part of the world that you have always wanted to see. Do that Peace Corps thing you are thinking about or something else like it. School and major career decisions can wait a bit - you don’t have to have everything figured out by the time you’re 25 or whatever.

I think everyone has a similar experience in one way or another. I just graduated Culinary School in July with a Pastry Arts degree and I’m going back in a couple of weeks to start another degree. I think its a matter of finding what you enjoy doing, what your good at doing ,and what makes you happy, and finding a career that combines all of those things. Good Luck :)

Oh my goodness! If there is any way that you could join the Peace Corps, I think you should do it. After all, when you are old, you will have fantastic tales to tell and that wonderful feeling of having done your part to serve humanity. During the time that you are away, you will have time to evaluate your options and choose your path. Go,go, go! I wish I could.

Ever thought of teaching English in Japan or Taiwan or Korea or something? A lot of people do it, and it sounds like you could get a lot out of it. With a degree already, you’d easily find a job. Check out something like the JET Program (http://www.jetprogramme.org/) though there are many others. The pay isn’t great but that’s not really the point.

The only problem with the Peace Corps thing right now is that since my best friend died recently I question my motives. Am I just running away? And even if I’m not am I really strong enough to deal with the pressures of the Peace Corps at this point in my life.

I might look into the Jet program as well.

If the Jet program requires a shorter length of stay than two years it may be the way to go.

I don’t know what the Jet program is. If you are concerned about your ability to deal with the pressures of the Peace Corps, maybe you need to just sit still for awhile and go through some of the steps of the grief process. You should not join any program if you feel as though you would be running away rather than running toward a new opportunity. I doubt that you would be thrown right into service, though. Have you checked with the Peace Corps to see what kind of training they offer and how long it would take? If you decide to join, you could dedicate your service in memory of your dear friend. What a wonderful way to honor your friend’s life.

I’ve had an application half filled out for the Peace Corps for the past several years, so it is something I’ve been wanting for a long time. Once I actually submit the application, it takes six months to a year before I’d actually depart for service. Right now I am grieving and I realize I still need more time to do so, but I also realize that I need start living my dreams. Life actually doesn’t last forever.

And I just checked out the Jet program and it seems to be a year long commitment. But the program doesn’t appeal to me as much as the Peace Corps.

I agree on all counts. You need to keep living while you get over your loss. I have never felt that halting all activity helps the grieving person. You may not have your usual amount of energy, though. Don’t forget to take care of yourself by eating right and resting when you feel weary. You are under a great deal of stress with your grief. Be good to yourself.
Do you have a link to the Jet Program? I would love to take a look at it.

Radiation Therapy. I think it is a really great health care job. You treat cancer patients with Radiation.
