Can eating too much fiber at once make you sick to your stomach?

The reason I ask, is i just ate quite a few wheat free oreo cookies (maybe around 10) and i didn’t realize that each cookie had 1 gram of fiber in it. about an hour or so after eating, i puked 3 or 4 times. i’m feeling alot better right now, but its still not right, my stomach is tender and hurts..can too much fiber at once do this to you?

i have an extreme sweet tooth, and oreos are like chips, you eat one..you end up eating a ton. anyway, i won’t do that again thats for sure.

i dont think fiber is going to affect your stomach in which you puke.. but it will make you a bit rumbly if eaten too much.. and yes, you will sit on the throne for a while.. lol…

fiber is something that keeps liquid in your stool.. so it is easier to go to the bathroom… nothing else..

I used to eat super high-fiber cereal for breakfast which has a full days worth (25 grams) of fiber per serving, every day. It was probably something unrelated to the fiber that made you sick.

That’s a very small amount of fiber. People eat over 25 grams of fiber and double that and it shouldn’t do that to you, although it could cause some nausea (talking about more than 20 grams here). I noticed you look like you are of scandinavian or northern European heritage, and you live in the midwest. I suggest you find out if you have celiac disease with the proper bloodwork. Wheat free oreos are not gluten free, I don’t know of any that are (unless you are eating gluten free ones) and if you have the background I am thinking you might, and you had that reaction from that product, this could be from something like Celiac. Celiac is serious, get it checked out.

This doesn’t necessarily apply to only specific backgrounds, it’s prevalent in people from all areas now (1 in 100 to 250 people), but most common in certain areas of the world. If you have a GI workup, you will see questions pertaining to your ethnicity and your ancestral background, so it’s very common to assume a prevalence for specific locales, in fact it’s expected. Just amending the statement in case it seems unusual.

on the lighter side, my boyfriend says he’d have the same reaction from eating ten cookies too (that’s a lot of cookies!). I get it though, yum.

Dangers of high fiber cereal… two nights ago I ate a late night snack of plain yogurt with prunes, sprinkled with All-Bran cereal (very high fiber). Prior to the snack I drank a large glass of water. I woke up in the night with stomach cramping but didn’t connect the two. In the morning I got up and had my usual bowl of All-Bran with milk. Shortly after I started vomiting, had more stomach cramps. I couldn’t go to work. I had to stay in bed all day. Even a sip of water would bring on the cramping. At around 8 PM I tried a sip of juice, and then started puking again. I puked up a hard ball of the high fiber cereal. Around 5 am I got up and was feeling well enough to have some chicken broth. By the next day I was mostly back to normal (but eating little and carefully). I can only think that I OD’ed on fiber. Since I had a glass of water with the yogurt-cereal, I don’t think the problem was lack of fluids. I eat a high fiber diet all the time. I am now very wary of high fiber cereal.
