Removing odors from your microwave
I just moved out on my own into an apartment with my friend. I’m still in college and don’t have too much money so I picked up a microwave off the Craigslist for $10. The inside did have an odor that I thought I could get rid of, but I was wrong.. at least at first. I tried scrubbing the inside with a scotch pad and some dish liquid but it didn’t help much (although it did look nice and clean).
Since virtually every house in America has a microwave nowadays, I know that the microwave odor may be a problem in your home. Here are a few tips to combat this problem:
1. Take a lemon and cut it up into a few slices. Then throw them into a bowl. Add a little water and put the bowl in your microwave. Set on HIGH anywhere from 1-3 minutes. Voila! A nice lemony fresh microwave scent.
2. Get a cup and fill 1/3 of it with vinegar. Then fill it up with water. You can put more or less vinegar, but 1/3 cup worked for me just fine. Then microwave on HIGH for 3-6 minutes (depending on your microwave) or until boiling. Let it sit in the microwave for about 10 minutes. TADA! Odors should be gone.
Now I recommend you clean the inside of the microwave like I did before you try this, to maximize it’s effect.
Both are very cost effective ways to cleaning your microwave. Now go try it out!
