Is it polite to not talk while others are typing on IM?

I’ve been noticing that when I start typing, people stop typing. I feel a little awkward because I’ll just start talking while in the middle of someone typing a message. I was just wondering if it were just a common courtesy or just coincidence. Thanks for any adivce. :p

I don’t know if it’s rude or not, but I don’t really care if someone talks to me while I’m typing.

I know that when I’m having an AIM conversation that I use the same etiquette that I use in real conversations. So…When others are typing I like to give them a chance to get out whatever they were thinking of before introducing a new topic and throwing off there train of thought.

When people interject when I’m typing I totally forget what I had wanted to say in the first place and sometimes it’s important (not life or death important…but important all the same).

Hmm.. I never thought about it like that. I’ll have to give that thought next time I’m about to intrude. But I mean sometimes I’ll get in this habit of not completing sentences and I use ellipses mostly when I want to show them I’m not done. I begin finishing my sentence and I’ll see that they are typing and hesistate before continuing and more than most of the time what they had to say would’ve either been covered or was a misunderstanding because my whole thought wasn’t complete.
