Internet help: I bought a router, and I’ve been trying to get it to work - Help.com

I bought a router, and I’ve been trying to get it to work for the past four and a half hours so far, so I’ve gotten pretty angry by this point.

Since our internet is stupid (Roadrunner), I had to enter all the IP and DNS crap into the connection myself (had to do the same for xbox live). Anyway, I now have a little icon on my taskbar saying that the internet is connected, but I can’t browse teh interwebz, and whenever I run the setup for the router, it says that I’m not connected. Why is this?

It’s a Belkin Wireless G.

I seriously have no ******* clue why it’s not working. for some reason, I’m guessing it’s my computer. It always does stupid stuff with the internet.

Your best bet is to go through Belkin support. Make sure you have some time and a wireless speakerphone - you’ll be monkeying with wires and the keyboard a lot.

If you want to try again yourself, its time to read the manual. It’s vital.

Think of the internet like pipes - just like that old congressdude said. We have to make sure that the pipes are all connected right.

The router has all sorts of little icons on it, and they all mean something…

Well, I called them, but I just got some retard with an accent. :D

All he did was repeat the directions in the manual to me, and then told me to call Microsoft and ask them about it.

One of them - check your manual - means “I can hear the internet”; if that’s not lighting, then there’s a problem in that DNS gobbledegook.

The next several are your devices - they’re saying “I can/cannot deliver the net to these devices - 1 2 3 4. What we’re doing here is tracking the problem to where its all stopped up…

You could consider getting a program called “Network Magic” - it was bundled with my D-link, and takes care a lot of this junk automatically. Did you get any software bundled with your router?

Yeah - they all have accents. Try again - it’s their product that’s screwing up, you probably just got some loafer that doesn’t want to work. If he gives you guff, tell him you want to talk to a supervisor - that’ll get you on the “preferred” (peeved off) support line; they’ll usually bend over backwards to get you situated.

And, like I said, look into Network Magic - it’s a free DL, and will continue to function (at a low level) when the free trial runs out.
