I’m having trouble deciding what I want to be.

Hi, I’m almost 16, but I know what I would want to be when I grow up but I’m having trouble picking what I should do. One is my favorite subject is science and would like to be a Eye Surgeon. I also play drums and I don’t know if I should start a band and stry to get really good. And that last is to be a swimmer. Like right after seeing like Michael Phelps winning all those inspired me and myself just told me that I should do swimming. But I thought this would pass and its just a phase. Then I saw one of the olympic commercials and made me feel really inspired also my mom was a very good swimmer when she was young and my dad is pretty good too. So what do you guys think? Thanks!

I can tell you this….you need to do something that you like, or even something that you love, but it MUST also give you cash…no one can live without it, and if you choose something you don’t like doing, you’ll be very unhappy…

I’m going to follow Industrial Engineering for example, since I like science, and it really gives you money…and after that I plan studying something because I just love it…for example philosophy!

Your still young which means that you have alot of time to decide what you want to become. Only you can decide your destiny (we can only help guide you) and eventually you will follow the path that you seek, whatever it may be.

The good news is that these goals are not mutually exclusive. Talent in the sciences correlates very strongly with talent in music. That’s why MIT has some of the best musical ensembles of any university in the U.S. MANY, MANY doctors also play with musical combos on the side, and they do it all their lives. And you can be on the swim team all the way through high school and college, then swim recreationally all your life.

If you wanted to be a cattle rancher, an astronaut, and a Disney character in the Magic Kingdom, I’d say sorry, buddy, you gotta pick a direction. But what the three passions you have mentioned will bring you is a life that’s wonderfully in balance.

Congratulations on being well-rounded.
