I am not a counselor but I was studying it for awhile. I even did a videotape of a first meeting. In the first meeting you have to first get to know the person, and what the main reason for them coming to you is. Usually it is a good idea to try to not get to serious the first meeting. In the first meeting you need try to get to know their past alittle, what their major problem is, why it is causing them such a major problems, what they have tried to do to fix the problem, what their others problems are, what support or other help they have avaialble to them, and how they see themselves. Through the course of your session you should be slowly forming a repore with e person so that they know you understand and you are there to help. At the end of the session it is usually good to give them some type of homework. It can be trying a remedy that you all developed in the session to one of their problem or an exercise that may help their self esteem or if they have no support maybe having them talk to a new person. The homework is to help them in some way.
