Why was consumating closed down?

I didn’t want to go on it anyway, because it wasn’t my style of thing, but I went on wikipedia and it said that it was “closed down in March 2008″. Ever since I have been wondering why it was closed down.

Consumating was shut down because CNET decided the user base was small enough and the ad revenue was small enough that it didn’t warrant the expenditure required to keep it running.

So, they laid off the last guy and announced a shutdown timeline, round about ****. Patrick’s Day 2008. That was when Consumating was directed here.

It was a business decision. None of the original staff members were still working on it and only one remained at CNET, who bought Consumating from Ben Brown in 2005. CNET had, over the previous six months or so, allowed one employee to spend one hour a week clearing out the log files and doing other small maintenance related things. Finally, the decision was made to shut it down. By then, most of us had gone to a replacement site or two.

Consumating members in San Francisco held a funeral service for the site with the California Department of Forestries Pipes and Drum Corps at CNET headquarters. Then, the six of us that remained adjourned to a local bar to reminisce.

(Apollo was also known as Osteocephalic, the highest ranking male Consumater in the San Francisco Bay Area - #8 overall).
