Where were you?
You can also watch events on Help.com as they happen
You will have to install the drivers for sound. go to the web site of your laptop.
And download the new drivers and updates.
Sorry to put damper on the driver problem but xp home and xp pro would use the same version ofdriver. so its on the pc somewhere upgrading would not delete it .
unless they have upgraded and create a dual boot system, this would mean the xp pro is a new installation
to upgrade from xp home to xp pro there is no need to wipe hard disk or delete drivers??
No one has mentioned that dude!
when windows does an update from home to xp pro, it creates two bootable operating systems, xp pro then becomes a new installation.
Personaly though if I was to upgrade I would do just that dude. wipe clean and start afresh.
ha ha ha Anthrax “cork in the speakers”
Well your close ……..it could be the cork called mute thats stopping the sound or it could be ?????…….broke
Sorry again it does not create 2 bootable systems either it just looks like it does ? the boot.ini gets another entry by default when you upgrade but it won’t boot into home just into where it used to be (which is now xp pro?)
I would not try and call anyone stupid ?lol but I do this for a living and its not unusual ?
A typical boot.ini after upgrade looks like :-
[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Professional” /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS=”Microsoft Windows XP Home” /noexecute=optin /fastdetect
and as you can see despite it saying Xp and Home in boot menu they both point to same partitions and drives:-
Managing to update any operating system is easier than you think I use my own unattended install disk , all I need to do is boot from it and wait 40 mins till its finished no user input other than pressing spacebar to boot from cd, all settings
and key are entered for me in text file .
Lol Nice one I have loads too but post would get way off track :-0
lol We used to wonder why one of our servers kept failing till we came in early one morning and found the cleaner hoovering the room ??? Where did she plug it into !!
Can beat that one of our lecturers called to testify in front of his class that something was missing from the pc in the room , he insisted it was a 32 bit pc but was missing 7 pieces :-) he could only find 25 components inside base unit…? and wanted me to tell students where the other ” missing ” bits were as he had forgotten!
I had afriend who is colour blind, he tried to rewire the electrics in a bank and blew £150,000 server.
Yeah I have been in the IT market since 1997 I have had that happen loads of time.
The worst pc I have ever worked on is a Time machine, they welded the cards to the cases. You should of seen the look on the customers face when I said “sorry you have to buy a whole new pc”
That thing with the dual boot mate is right, trust me. I have worked with enough upgrades and downgrades to know that users shouldnt install windows they should leave it to IT guys.
Thanks for the help, I downloaded the sound drive from manufacture website and everything is working perfect.
So now I have a problem with the wireless network.
I lost my cd and i can’t figure it out how to make it work.
Mine is WL-100g Asus of 54Mbps.
Any kind of help is appreciated.
Hey man
Asus nice one and easy one
Go to www.asus.com
choose the countries location and download driver
Asus are ace
I have to say I think asus have hit the nail on the head with their products.
I have asus all round MB and GPU combined with the corsair ram, its a happy pc.
I never understand why people buy one manufactures motherboard then buy a different manufactures graphics card.
I have seen whats coming in new tech for motherboards and graphics, through asus.
And wow it will give the Nvidia Quadro a run for its money :o)
Ah Asus ? that explains it , check what make of sound card it has if its listed as a ac97 , sigmatel or soundmax then stop windows from doing an update for the sound drivers , the ms update is flawed in so much as it looks like its installed but it obviously does not work.
I got, thanks for the help guys.
All I need to do was install the Wireless card to the laptop and let the wireless Zero Configuration do it’s job.
I thank everybody for the help. Thanks again,
Your welcome though Im unsure how installing the wireless card brought back the sound ? Im glad its working
Doh! What a muppet…. the good old re-istall fix ….used it many a time pity it was not mentioned earlier
