My car only cranks half the time.

I have tried everything I can think of, does anyone know what this may be? It always gets really close to cranking but it just will not catch.

its a 2004 nissan sentra. once you get it to crank the first time, it will crank everytime after that, but if you wait a little while it will stop cranking again.
