It’s Laborday weekend!

Can’t get ahold of a Vet or Rescue person in my area (I’ve tried). Found a tiny kitten (looks to be 4-5wks.) on a deserted dirt backroad. Loaded with fleas and ticks, stick thin, puss coming out of eyes. what can I do to help it until I can reach a vet?

The kitten has an eye infection and must receive antibiotics. Feed the kitten and manually remove the fleas and ticks. Beware of “flea shampoos” with pyrethrins that can actually kill a kitten or puppy. This cat will require veterinary care, however, and there is no real substitute for it. Remove ticks with tweezers, being careful not to leave the head of the tick embedded in the skin. You might be able to give the kitten a bath with regular cat shampoo, which should physically remove most fleas. But the eye infection is common and WILL require veterinary care. You should also have the kitten checked for feline leukemia and feline AIDS–do NOT let it around other cats until you KNOW the cat doesn’t have contagious, fatal diseases.
