Love help: Who here has just packed up and moved across the country? - Help.com

Who here has just packed up and moved across the country?

All by yourself.

im debating doing this as my life in Michigan seems to be going nowhere fast (oh wait its already there). I graduated college only to find myself $30k+ in debt and without a new job, instead of all the wonderful things they love to promise you.

I thought things would get a little better in time, but seeing as its been over a year out of college now its safe to say nothing is changing. I have not got a single interview, i’ve had my boss give me recommendations to her friends in other departments (I work at U of M) about jobs that were open and they said they would at least give me an interview, and they didnt. Im horribly broke and dont know how to pay all of my bills off making $11/hr. Im back living at home and pretty much hate my life on a day to day basis.

So im thinking I need to move, but I know id have to go alone, and being in so much debt and having so little money makes me think I just couldnt do it even if I tried. so what do I do?

Well I’ve moved across the country myself, but I live in England, so not quite the same thing! Its only a few hours to get anywhere. Certainly sounds like you could do with a fresh start

You can do it. Lots of people have. Just have a clear plan where you’re going and don’t let anything stop you.

Just keep driving until you run out of gas and decide that’s where you’ll live.

I did that. I lived in Michigan, too. In fact, I’ve done it a few times! First time, I decided that I wanted to experience life a little more than growing up in Ithaca, MI, had offered, so I took off to NYC. It was great, but after a year decided to continue on and go to college, so I packed my things and (for some reason I still don’t understand) decided to go to Arizona State University. After a year there, I decided I hated it. Moved back in with my parents for a while (in Michigan), then took for for North Carolina where I live now, and love still years later.

I say go for it. Life’s too short to hate where you are, and I can totally understand not being happy in Michigan. Its a tough state to live in right now. If you’re not tied down, then go!

The debt sucks, but you should never let money hold you back. Whether you live in Michigan, Nepal, or Mozambique the debt’ll be there. May as well have a pleasant view out your window when you’re paying all the money back, right?

Chances are, since you’ve been able to find a job in Michigan, you’ll find a job wherever you go.

The important thing to keep in mind, though, is to know when to give up. If you move some where, and it isn’t working out, know when to hop ship before you find yourself not only in a deeper hole, but also with no one around to help support you through your difficulties.

You can’t think like that!!! You have to decide that you will make it work, then do it.

But, it is a good idea to be willing to swallow a bit of crow and come back if you must. I’m sure your family will understand that trying to fly sometimes means falling a time or two.

well the problem is, the job I have is the same dead-end job i’ve had for 4 years, and I cant find a new job or else I would have.

I can barely afford my bills as-is, I highly doubt I could afford living on my own considering most other parts of the country cost even more to live then it does here.

My degree is worthless because I fell for the ITT-Tech scam.

And I dont even have a car anymore because my explorer decided to fall apart AFTER an $800 repair job, and I sure cant afford nor get approved for a new car.

So I would have to find someplace to live, find a job thats probly minimum wage, get a car somehow, and then somehow pay my bills and have enough money leftover for food/gas/utilities/maintenance which we all know costs way to much these days.

I feel pretty screwed right now.

Where is it that you want to go?

Just save what you can for a while, living on the absolute minimum you can. When you can afford a a U-Haul and a few months rent somewhere else, hit the road.

Look into living places with decent public transit, that way you don’t have to have a car to survive whenever you get to where you’re going.

Scour Craig’s List for job postings in the areas you’re interested in living in, and you should be able to at least get some interviews or something lined up before you go.

Do you have friends who’ve moved away that you could stay with until you find a place to live? If not, check out CouchSurfing.com for ideas.

If you want to get out of Michigan, you can make it happen. You just have to make happen. There are all sorts of options out there to help you transition — be creative! As a tax-payer, I will say I have no qualms against people who use public services to get to newer, better locations with more opportunities.

hehe oh well! I tried… but seriously, look into moving some place far or where you’re not used to. I guarantee it will be a life changing experience. But whatever you do, don’t go there looking for love, that usually takes time so don’t expect it right away.. Wherever you do decide to go, make sure you enjoy life. Good luck!

Small towns are actually easier to move to. It doesn’t take long to meet someone who knows someone…. And the more people you get to know and the more they trust you, the better you’re chances of finding something great. :)
