LIBRARY SCIENTISTS, UNITE!

I am looking for someone who has exeperience as a librarian, preferably in a small or mid-size library (1,000 to 10,000 volumes). Are you one, or do you know one?

I need a reliable recommendation for a *computer program* that can be used to create an electronic library catalog. There are programs available online, and my small nonprofit institution already has a barcode reader, so we’re ahead of the game. But the program we have, BookCollector (http://www.collectorz.com/book/) is extremely user-unfirendly. I spent a whole day wrestling with it.

I am sitting on top of 2,000 totally uncatalogued books, which I inherited from my predecesor. I am supposed to be dealing with these books this week, but until we get the software in place I can’t get started. The faster you can advise me, the better! Can you help, or refer me to someone who can?

I’ll be talking to one of the librarians here at our university tomorrow… I’ll see what she says…I don’t promise anything, but if she has any ideas, I’ll post them here tomorrow night.

BTW wow…. 2000 uncatalogued books… no wonder you are posting so many times… I would feel a little desparate too. :-)

Thanks, fengshuisweetheart! Someone (another source) suggested Follett software (http://www.follettsoftware.com/sub/library_management/). I am testing it now. Has anyone used Follett?

It is important that the program, whatever it is, be able to find at least some information about books by itself (i.e. using ISBN, it will automatically import book info over the internet). I received a suggestion to us the simple Microsoft Access program, but the problem there is that ALL book info must be entered by hand. …I do not want to still be doing this project at this time next year!

Our library uses Innovative Interfaces, which she says is does simplify things; however, I am not sure they are low budget: http://www.iii.com/solutions/index.shtml

She said she’d look up the names of a couple others she might recommend and let me know tomorrow.

I’ll ask a couple other people I know who are working on their MLS and volunteering at smaller libraries… they might know of something.
