Doesn’t the electoral college and all make us more of a republic than a democracy ?(if we are talking about the U.S. of A. here) And I would have to say the answer to your question is money, unfortunately…

As far as God, well I have to say that I believe… but I’m too tired to talk about it now…andd such iscussion have been know to digress into less than agreeable arguments on this site….

The kids riding their bikes are getting exercise and thinking about a cause greater than themselves. This is better than sitting at home eating Cheetos. If their parents push them too hard it will backfire. They are most likely loving and compassionate, but ignorant parents. Most are.

Your father is missing the point of life. It is not about “testing” and “faith”, but about learning. Failure is as important as success. The “good” and “bad” of life both have lessons to teach.

Unfortunately, most people do need some reason to be kind and moral. The best reason, and the only one really needed, is that the other person is a human being.
This is what the Good Book and all the other religious texts are saying. They are all metaphorical and are meant to guide you through life. When they are taken literally, they produce hatred and ignorance, the opposite of their intended effect.

Democracy is only as good as the people in it. Most of the time it is simply a tool of the rich to further enrich themselves. It is vastly overrated. You are quite astute to be skeptical of it.

I have to question whether it is indeed “literal” as most texts do refer to not judging others. I believe rather that it may be the complex and individual needs of human beings that change the perceived context in which scriptures are taken. Which you may have meant and I simply read wrong.

Everything else you have stated I would tend to agree with ThisisGod and well said.

Wow, that was VERY well said! I feel like anything I say won’t even begin to compare to that.
