Okay, So I’m slowly moving into a new chapter in my life…

but I’m having a little trouble with that.

Well, I found a city I love…but it’s about an hour away from my family. I’m going to start college in this city this spring, but until then I somehow managed to land a full time job in this city. I like the job alot. And I’m so lucky to have a place to stay some nights instead of having to drive an hour back and forth. My boyfriend has really been an angel to me lately, letting me stay with him while I’m working in town. That part has been very fun and completely unstressful.
This started a couple weeks ago.
BUT.. every couple of days, or every day sometimes…I start missing my family, alot. My mother and I are very close, like best friends, and we’ve spent alot of time together. She knows almost everything about what I do, in general…but since I got this job, I haven’t been there nearly as much and I miss her alot.
I miss how things were before I started wanting to push my life forward. And I feel bad that I’m not there as much for her. Is this normal? For my current situation and what I’m heading into?
I feel all sad about it! And I’m supposed to be working right now instead of typing a blog! :(

Communicate as much as you can with her. Write her e mails, letters, and text her letting her know whats going on, ect. It will make the time go by faster until you see her again.

Of course this is unsettling for you. Your life as you know it is changing completely. Your mother has raised you, she must by now have realized what raising a child means and that letting go of it is part of the progress.
Be in touch with her, call her every day or every second day, try to include her in your life by telling her what’s going on and visit your family once in a while. It’s really not that far away so it shouldnt be a problem for you. Your life is going great, you should be happy and I’m sure your family is happy for you and your mum is very very proud for you. And I think she wouldn’t want you to feel guilty.
Why don’t you tell her how you feel? I’m sure that’ll make you feel better.

Invite your mother to come to the city to spend time with you. To of my adult children live about the same distance away from me as you do from your mother. I know that they are very busy with their lives. At this point, I have more time so I go to see them. It gives me an opportunity to feel connected to them. Oh, and if you do not have space to entertain, meeting in a mall or at a park is a fun way to share time.

Write her cards and letters, and ask her to write back. Emails, texts and phone calls are fine, but all of those fade into the ether. A letter is something you can keep for a lifetime. This will also help you to not feel so “joined at the hip” with her, like a continuous stream of emails, IMs and text could.

I think it’s great that you have entered this exciting time in your life. Good luck with the job and college. As you tumble out of the nest, be thankful that your parents are teaching you to fly with such gentleness and love.
