Local Area Network (LAN). All you need is a bus or hub, and some lan cables. You might need to run some config after you connect, but it’s all pretty simple. Have a word to the network admin at school if you want to link networks, sometimes it can be done over a Virtual Private Network (VPN) on the internet, without the need for cables etc.

Also, some schools and networks have wireless LAN, which is the same but with (duh) no cables and a wireless LAN.

Ah good old intranet ??? do you know what intranet is ? I will give you a clue ? internet is an outside the school connection to the world , intranet is internal , now if you trying to access school files you need setup config ? user names ? and passwords ? hence my initial suggestion see network admin and they will tell you how to do it ? Oh and yes I not only have tried it but i’ve been supporting , configuring and purchasing it all for 20 years . so I think im qualified to contradict ?

oh i seeeeeeeeeeee.

yeah well, ive done it, so have the other 4000 people at my school.
so i dont see whats stopping him.
of course you need a password and stuff, and you need it configured. and obviously there are some files he wont be allowed to look at.

but we dont even know what kind of network his school has! this is all hypothetical.
if he wants a really good answer and a solution, he needs to go to his school, not us.

Ok, before super_ritchie and sherooo start fist fighting. You can not connect to your schools LAN from home. If you connect via the internet to your schools network, it’s WAN (Wide Area Network). WAN often gets confused with WLAN (Wireless Local Area Network)… these are not the same.

but do we need to set our own WAN ip address from the network admin?
i mean in case they have their own firewall config or something
i’m also thinking of connecting my pc at home to the network at my office to have access to the database system…

I think typically the school network admin would want your mac address.

[quote super_ritchiebaby]Oh Really tell me then how is he gonna connect to his school network from home ? a really long cable ?

LOL. I wonder how ritchiebaby thinks most computers are connected to a network over long distances (you know, that thing called the internet).

Your right only computers on internet use really long cables as I said earlier he could use one ? Im sure I said that , the post was connecting to college network at the actual college whereever that may be Im sure he does not live there ? hence the suggestion for the really long cable from his house to school into the network switches of the school he could then access it all ….lol

Yes lol, you can of course use the same cables (phone lines, whatever) to form an intranet between the school and his house…with the appropriate permissions.

Ah ha there you go then phone lines carry just 2 wires networks run on 4 or 8 for cat 6 again ” intranet ” is :- An “intranet” is a secure private computer network that uses Internet protocols and network connectivity to securely share part of an organization’s information or operations with its employees. Sometimes the term refers only to the organization’s internal website.

So the main point is its private and usually not available (cept to some folk :-) me) on the outside world network now if it was an extranet :- An extranet is a private network that uses Internet protocols, network connectivity, and possibly the public telecommunication system to securely share part of an organization’s information or operations with suppliers, vendors, partners, customers or other businesses. An extranet can be viewed as part of a company’s intranet that is extended to users outside the company (e.g.: normally over the Internet).
