Its supposed to be in a underground lab on the french swiss border, and they are supposed to be recreating a black hole by making atoms spin at the speed of light then colliding them, there is a fear that it will create an unstable black hole that could eventually engulf the world inside out. But think about, if it was that dangerous, they wouldnt do it, why risk the world for an experiment. I think its litle experiment and rumours have spread making it sound bigger and more dangerous than it is. If it is even going to happen.

they speed up the particles, increasing the chance that they hit and smash each other up, making things called particulates. these are what make up an atom and can mainly only be found in the centre of suns. now as they break, they cause an ideal condition for wormholes or blackholes but even if these are formed it will be on a microscopic level and should (hopefully) not grow or affect us in any way. *takes a deap breath*

As for the comment about scientists not wanting to put lives in danger, that I don’t agree with. All because of two words that contradict that theory:

You’d be surprised how many people are still questioning the 2012 theory here on posts. It’s getting to actually be quite irritating. I hadn’t heard of this experiment before this post. But remember all the other theories from the years before. June 6th 2006 was supposed to be the end, too. In every decade there’s some kooky Armeggedon theory. I say we just stop guessing and go about our lives, it’d save the paranoia.

It almost certainly won’t mean the end of the world. You’re talking about the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. It’s a device - but not exactly a new one. It will be the world’s largest supercollider and is being used to test the various limitations of the current ideas we have about physics, especialy in relation to subatomic particles. Without going into too much detail they’re looking for proof of the existance of the higgs boson particle - which will either verify or disprove a whole bunch of rather critical theories.

Some scientists beleive that things called “micro black holes” may be created. These things could, theoreticaly be created according to what we know at the moment - but even those scientists who beleive that the LHC could create these micro black holes agree that according to what we know at the moment - these micro black holes would decay very quickly. And don’t forget that most phsysicists agree that according to conventional physics you would need a lot more energy to create a micro black hole. The only place where micro black holes devour the world is in sci fi novels.

Trouble is a bunch of people got hold of the word black hole and spread it around without doing any proper background reading - and in an argument between 99% of the respected physicists in the world and an idiot tabloid journalist I know who my money is on.

Basicaly you’re more likely to be attacked by a T-Rex or have bigfoot move in next door than the LHC is to spell the end of the world

So basicaly you have more chance

Look, if we have already created a black hole and nothing happened, that was 2 years ago, then surely their is nothing to be worried about now!

Here is a link to a known website that delivers the news and the link to the article, it is an article for sky news in 2005

yeah i also heard that “micro black holes” are theoretically being considered, but that because of their size they could be manageable. theoretically. if they ever reach that point in experimentation.

but just out of curiosity, why 8 days?

The first big test is then I think. I’ve been keeping an eye on it - it’s kinda interesting

VERY interesting! my friend had been keeping me informed a bit before we split up for college (he’s a particle physics major), but i hadn’t heard anything about it recently. cool. :)

Don’t worry about it. The so call black holes will be very very small and will evaporate before they have a chance to swallow the earth.

Besides, if it does happen you would never know what hit you.

Hmm so this in 8 days is after a few that were predicted and wrong, like the millenium one but before the one that is predicted for 2012, so if the world ends in 8days then the 2012 one is wrong, like all the others…

Easy fact, the world ends when you die, your world has gone. People read too much into this things like the tarrot reading and the death card, that just means a chapter in your life has died and like all death there is a new begining.

a black hole of the size you are discribing isn’t massive enough to really suck anything except dust particulates… sorry but the world will not end in 8 days

OK, seven days to go then. If it is true…

But don’t forget to update us on the outcome of it! I may miss the end of the world because of lack of attention, because I don’t watch TV a lot.

The project is not a rumor, it exists. I’ve been studying this since I was in 7th grade. The chances of the black hole causing any damage are 1/1,000,000. Nothing to worry about, just flip on the news and watch science be disproved.

if it were true it could cause massive amounts of damage. but the world wont end becuse of a black hole, i can assure you of that =). even if the black hole was created (was a 1/1,000,000 chance of them even getting it to spark) it would require a continuous power supply which it doesn’t obtain by sucking things in but buy the explosion of stars (so dont worry about it, it wont happen)
