loan help: Catch 22 - Help.com

Catch 22

I’m in default with student loans because I can’t earn enough to pay them. I can’t get an advanced degree (which I’d like to do) so that I could earn enough to pay them because I can’t take out more student loans. Declaring bankruptcy won’t help because student loans are exempt from that. What can I do?

you could try a debt consolidation agency, just be sure to do research first because there are some scammers out there.

Thanks for the advice but I did that awhile back. I was told then that it was a one shot deal. The loan is now in the hands of the dept. of education.

A debt collector contacted me on their behalf a couple years ago. He informed me that if I paid a minimum amount (which was substantial) for 18 months that they’d remove it from my credit record and I’d again be eligible for student loans, but the only way would be if they deducted it electronically out of my account. It sounded great, and I struggled to make the payments and let other bills pile up. At the 12 month mark they didn’t deduct the money, even though it was there. I called my contact and he told me that the money wasn’t there and that I’d have to start from the beginning again. That wasn’t happening so that’s where I’m at now.

I sent an email about this whole matter to the dept. of education last week but haven’t heard a reply as of yet.

I got a better job at the beginning of this year and hoped to work on paying them off, but with the cost of everything going up, I’m still just barely staying even. Lucky thing I got this job or I’d really be screwed now.

Take up another job. You can apply for freelance writing, bookkeeping, software, transcription, online tuition or customer service work at home jobs. These companies do not require any fee and pay well . List of companies(with websites) offering genuine work at home jobs is available at http://www.pcworkathome.net . Many of these companies have been in business for several years

If you have a good job , you can ask for a loan at your credit union or Prosper. People may help you. More information at http://www.acreditlibrary.com/prosper… and http://luccu.org

That’s been my plan. At my last job I already worked too many hours for that to be an option. Since getting the job I have now I have more time so I’ve been looking. I’m expecting to get a part-time bartending job as soon as there’s an opening, but that’s a waiting game.

I live in a small rural town where jobs are scarce. I have a car with high miles so combine that with the price of gas it doesn’t seem feasible to travel for a little extra work.

I really appreciate the link, I’m gonna look into it. I’ve often thought I’d like to do some writing. My challenge is that I don’t have a computer at home, but I’ll look into it anyway.

Thanks for the info.
