imagine two waves.. sinusoidal of course

when the crest of 1 wave coincides with the crest of the other, or the trough of one meets the trough of the other, we get a resultant crest/trough equal to the sum of the amplitudes of the 2 crests/troughs…. this is CONSTRUCTIVE interference.

similarly
when the crest of 1 wave coincides with the tough of the other or vice versa, we find that the resultant crest/trough formed depends on whose amplitude was greater.. crest larger than trough gives u crest and so on…the difference in amplitudes gives u the amplitude of the resultant.

this is DESTRUCTIVE interference..

Its not entirely accurate but should give u a pretty good idea…
