If it isn’t red, and there is no pain (and you have a healthy immune system), there could be a fluid build-up. Generally its not too serious, though it could still cause an infection.

Your best option would be to take out the piercing. Also, go to your piercer and ask their opinion. Seeing it in person, they’d probably have a better idea. (Or, if you got this in Canada, and you’re in NY now, just go to any piercer.)

It could also be that you just slept on your face funny and its irritated, and everything will go back down.

If the area does become red and painful, then you’re infected.

Again, I’d suggest taking out the piercing first, give it a day or so to calm down and see what happens.

I had a nose piercing go wrong once. The secret is in the antibiotics and keeping the area around it fresh. You have started the antibiotics but you have to continue the course (the whole pack). Clean the whole area with the stuff you use after piercings - I’m assuming you have a bottle of this stuff????. The antibiotics will kill the infection but if you have left it a bit too long then you may need an antibiotic injection. Remember - we are just people here - not doctors. It is very possible that you need a jab in your butt to kill the main infection. Come back and tell me what you are doing to clean it - if it’s that swollen I’m thinking you should be looking for a free clinic. - Mas

Like Mas said, one antibiotic won’t really do anything, except maybe kill off the weakest of the bugs… which only makes room for the stronger ones to multiply and take up that space.

This is why its important to take *all* of your antibiotics that the Doctor tells you too, anyone who is reading this, even after you start to feel better. You want to kill all the little germs, not just the weak ones.

Anyway, just wanted to get that rant out there. In case it does get infected you’ll have to seek medical attention. There’s really not much else you can do at that point.

saline spray, non-alcoholic mouthwashes, talk to your doctor and your piercer
