A Million Tears.
The cloudy residue on the mind remains
The drops of a thousand tears leaves stains
Yet no one cries for this missing gem?
The metaphorical lines complete with water
The cracks in the sand are the only existing borders
Can’t someone end this pain?
If I told you we were thirsty, would you hand me a cup?
If I told you we won’t quit at our cause, would you tell me to give up?
This moisture filled line, this treasure, this river of ours
Is our only source of life
Or it was
Because the mother of all nature came and stole it in hours
Our memories of our first strokes, gone, vanished
We now hold them only in our hearts, while life is banished
Prayers call out in a million words, to bring us rain this day
The winters end, the summer’s here, so there’s not much we can say
There’s still hope
So we can all stand on the banks of this mighty land
Give a tear or two, hand-in-hand
Because one day, our memories will just be legend
And not a million tears could ever take its place.
I wrote this as a tribute to Australia’s well known river. The Murray. It’s our source of life, and memories for a lot of us down here. Our farms and crops depend on it, we bathe with the water from it, most of us drink it, our animals use it, our fishing lives in it as well as all our native and wild animals.
Since the drought, there’s been almost nothing. Farms have shut down, there’s been a high demand in produce from imports (meaning higher prices, and unsanitary food) people are losing their jobs because there is nothing to work for, animals are dying, and fish and riverland are being wiped out. And that’s just in my state alone.
These, are a few photos I saw from a friend of mine. They were was taken in the town I pretty much grew up and around.

I haven’t been near the places where the river is for a while, I knew the drought was affecting it drastically, but when I saw these pictures, I literally went hysterical. I learnt to swim in that river, my daughter had her first swimming experiance in the very same river, at the same spot I did.
Most of my teenage childhood years are full of memories and happy times around it. BBQ’s, Bunyip’s, parties, I had my 15th and 16th birthday parties near it. I went camping on it, I learnt to kyak, canoe, sail, catamaran, fish, kneeboard, waterski, almost everything. This river was mine, and a lot of our childhoods. To think all this could be destroyed in just a few short years. It’s devasting, and it’s a nightmare I never wished could happen.
Those who know me, know that I don’t really have any patriotism towards Australia, in fact, I’m pretty much expressed it’s suckiness 98% of the time. But this river is just one of the few things I adore here. A few years ago, I was told the Murray’s water levels have decreased over the last one/two hundred years (since we first began to settle here from the First Fleet) but out in the middle, you could still drop a 500 foot fishing line sinker and run out of line before you ran out of depth. Look at the difference now.
Sorry, I know this seems like a pointless rant. But it’s just something that really bothers me. There was recently a community debate with a few of my friends in the council, and the MP’s in the federal government about what to do about the situation, I can’t even believe there would be an opposing side that is basically saying “forget about it…who cares?” Who ARE these people? They’re certainly not Australian, and yet they’re trying to do what’s best for the country. Bah. I’m so glad I’m a Democrat here. No corporate slime for me.
Anyways, I just wanted to share this, and maybe send a prayer out into the void that we can get some rain soon. I’ll leave with one more memory of happier times when the river was flourishng. To think that was just 5 years ago…
