A Million Tears.

The cloudy residue on the mind remains
The drops of a thousand tears leaves stains
Yet no one cries for this missing gem?
The metaphorical lines complete with water
The cracks in the sand are the only existing borders
Can’t someone end this pain?
If I told you we were thirsty, would you hand me a cup?
If I told you we won’t quit at our cause, would you tell me to give up?
This moisture filled line, this treasure, this river of ours
Is our only source of life
Or it was
Because the mother of all nature came and stole it in hours
Our memories of our first strokes, gone, vanished
We now hold them only in our hearts, while life is banished
Prayers call out in a million words, to bring us rain this day
The winters end, the summer’s here, so there’s not much we can say
There’s still hope
So we can all stand on the banks of this mighty land
Give a tear or two, hand-in-hand
Because one day, our memories will just be legend
And not a million tears could ever take its place.

I wrote this as a tribute to Australia’s well known river. The Murray. It’s our source of life, and memories for a lot of us down here. Our farms and crops depend on it, we bathe with the water from it, most of us drink it, our animals use it, our fishing lives in it as well as all our native and wild animals.

Since the drought, there’s been almost nothing. Farms have shut down, there’s been a high demand in produce from imports (meaning higher prices, and unsanitary food) people are losing their jobs because there is nothing to work for, animals are dying, and fish and riverland are being wiped out. And that’s just in my state alone.

These, are a few photos I saw from a friend of mine. They were was taken in the town I pretty much grew up and around.

I haven’t been near the places where the river is for a while, I knew the drought was affecting it drastically, but when I saw these pictures, I literally went hysterical. I learnt to swim in that river, my daughter had her first swimming experiance in the very same river, at the same spot I did.

Most of my teenage childhood years are full of memories and happy times around it. BBQ’s, Bunyip’s, parties, I had my 15th and 16th birthday parties near it. I went camping on it, I learnt to kyak, canoe, sail, catamaran, fish, kneeboard, waterski, almost everything. This river was mine, and a lot of our childhoods. To think all this could be destroyed in just a few short years. It’s devasting, and it’s a nightmare I never wished could happen.

Those who know me, know that I don’t really have any patriotism towards Australia, in fact, I’m pretty much expressed it’s suckiness 98% of the time. But this river is just one of the few things I adore here. A few years ago, I was told the Murray’s water levels have decreased over the last one/two hundred years (since we first began to settle here from the First Fleet) but out in the middle, you could still drop a 500 foot fishing line sinker and run out of line before you ran out of depth. Look at the difference now.

Sorry, I know this seems like a pointless rant. But it’s just something that really bothers me. There was recently a community debate with a few of my friends in the council, and the MP’s in the federal government about what to do about the situation, I can’t even believe there would be an opposing side that is basically saying “forget about it…who cares?” Who ARE these people? They’re certainly not Australian, and yet they’re trying to do what’s best for the country. Bah. I’m so glad I’m a Democrat here. No corporate slime for me.

Anyways, I just wanted to share this, and maybe send a prayer out into the void that we can get some rain soon. I’ll leave with one more memory of happier times when the river was flourishng. To think that was just 5 years ago…

I guess I’d be slautered for thinking Ford is better though. I’d hate to go to a Formula 1 race. Lol.

Yeah, Australia does have it’s moments. However, I think it’s not all it’s cracked up to be like it seems 90% of the world thinks. Most of it is just way too much hype, and the lack of the actual experiance of living in it. Or media influence.

Just the Murray means so much to me that it probably makes me sound contradicting. I’m in South Australia, which is already the driest state in the entire world. The Sahara Desert gets more rainfall than we do in a year. This drought, only makes it a thousand times worse, and there’s literally nothing we can do about it. It makes me so sad. I’m crying again right now just having to look back at those pictures to post them. Stupid HTML code.

Hello,
lovely pictures sad to see that such beauty is destroyed like that, I don’t know why people would be opposed to it, their is way to make it rain but it is up to your government to plan that!

There is so much we can do in Australia ,but we have Idiots running the Country .we are building Submarines what are totally useless (Collins Subs)a price of 2.5 Billion we are Sending Troops all over the World ,what cost Billions .We gave away more then a Billion to the Indonesians poor never got one cent.We have no proper Highway .Not from Brisbane to Sidney to Melbourne to Adelaide,to Perth,to Darwin,to Cairns .We have a local Government Council, State Government, and Federal Government and all getting fat Cheques every week. But we only have 23 million People
that could be run by as few as a hundred people .We have local Governors for each State one which costs millions and naturally the big guy who represents the British Empire .On stamp duty the poor Queen collects a few extra Dollars .Ah well since we are still a Colony no worries ,she’ll be right. what Water concerns ask yourself what would the Romans have done????You know the ones what build Canals over Bridges ,the Colosseum and a few other things .Do you realy believe they were that stupid like our Goverment. They would have brought the Water what runs up North every Year in the Ocean across to fill every water hole down to Victoria.

forget it who wants to listen ,wise men dont need to and idiots dont want to….

O gracie. I am so sorry for your loss. And on such a tremendous scale. And this is not only happenining in your Australia. There are number of global taking place, largely due to humanitys irresponsible handling of natural resources. We’re abusing what we have and we will suffer because of this.

such as,

the water resource problem that oceans face is the over-fishing of large ocean-dwelling fish, such as swordfish and tuna that are now nearing extinction, bad news for ocean ecology…

and the disgusting habit of clear-cutting trees, globablly…which again is awful for the ecology…

And pollution…oil in the water…pollutants in the air, the list is endless.

When are we going to take more ownership of this earth? And not prostitute it?

I have no idea, yew. I don’t understand it either. For Australia, it’s like having to see our own twin towers crumble before out eyes. And yes, I know it’s happening everywhere, and it darn well sucks to high heaven. Everyone here I know, the river is a heartache. I cry everytime I think of it, the fact that my children won’t ever grow up with the experiences I’ve had with it.

It just hurts to think that something I treasured so much, is just barren, and bare, when all I have are wonderful memories of it. And realizing no matter what, it won’t be the same again. It’ll just be dead, and nothing but a dirt wasteland. Children in the future will just see this dry space and have no knowledge of just how beautiful it really was. It’s just so sad. :(

Oh, Grace, I am sorry. There’s no reviving it? My god. Has the temperature been rising in Australia, that much? I do know, that most Australia is a very dry country? All those animals dead, the ecology completely shot. I don’t know. You’re children will get the chance to make other beautiful memories, I truly hope they will. You seem like an excellent human being and mother, you can make sure of it. :)
