Love help: How can I say, “I love you? - Help.com

How can I say, “I love you?

With a firm touch, with a tease,
With a photo of your laugh?

How can I say, “I miss you?”
Can I play it on a guitar
With the strings you gave me?
Should I send a thousand poems,
Or a single, long note?

You were 15 and I was 16.
I set a stained glass exhibit
For a museum that summer.
You worked in its library,
Searching and sorting.

In careful script, I once wrote that you
Were the most beautiful thing
In the museum. What a silly compliment.
Yet, I know you still have that card.
You will always be the most beautiful thing
To pass through the museum.

Your face is my favorite gallery.
Your irises are its halls.
Your neck is a famous arch.
Your voice is the sun that filters through.
I would visit everyday if I could-
Hobbling around happily in my old age.

Maybe I should say, “I love you. I miss you.”
Maybe, I can.
Perhaps, I will say it tomorrow.

Awww. That’s encouraging. It’s not truly a good poem by serious standards. In this case, heart substitutes for lack of skill. I really do miss her.

Aww. Well, I’m glad your emotion is going into writing. That’s what I do, too. Tends to help a bit.

OK. Not exactly a fine work of poetry. I’m happy to get reactions, though. I’ll probably post more poems when I write them if anyone likes it.

You’re right. You can eat poetry. I’ve actually done it before! I’m weird like that. Oh well.

if you want to write decent poems, here’s a good way to start:

buy a copy of America’s Best Poetry (XXXX) where the X’s are for some year.
choose a relatively structured poem and then write your own, personal version of it.

For example, write your own version of “I Want to Be Your Shoebox” by Catherine Bowman.

oh… having been with someone who could write incredible poetry and someone else who was a brilliant cook, I’d argue that great cooking is much more effective when you are in love.
