girl help: Assistant Manager… - Help.com

Assistant Manager…

I have a crush on my assistant manager at work! What should I do!? I want him to know how I feel or make it clear through my actions at least! He is flirty and nice to me and treats me differently than the other people (girls) I work with.

How do I get closer with him and try to let him know I am interested in him?

Don’t! If he is in you hierarchy of people to take orders from, the people you work with might think that you are just trying to get promoted faster by letting him know how you feel!

Is there a rule about dating co-workers in your union rules?

You don’t! You can get the TWO of you fired. And it will introduce stresses into the workplace that nobody needs. Workplace romances are a BAD idea. They don’t work out 95 percent of the time, and then you have to work with somebody that you dumped, or who dumped you.

Remember, Anon, “perception is reality” in the workplace. If people PERCEIVE you are getting ahead because of a personal relationship with someone in management, it will be REAL to them. Such a relationship got the CEO of Bendix fired many years ago. There are more recent examples, of course. This is playing with fire. You stand to lose your coworkers’ respect, your boss’s career, and your own job. Best to leave your own backyard to go “hunting,” and that way there’s not so many messes to clean up.

It is very hard to keep a workplace romance a secret. It will be the main topic of discussion in the office “rumor mill.” If the relationship doesn’t last, be prepared to be offered “condolences” at every turn, and some real dolts will be asking you “What happened?”

But if you feel really lucky, kid . . . !

Well, he is at a different store now, so people know and things are cool. I am very happy with him, but now I have other worries on my mind. Dealing with school issues. :o/
