Money help: I want to study writing. - Help.com

I want to study writing.

In other words, i want to be a writer, and would like to connect with people who have similar aspirations via a study program. Being from a very middle-class background from a poor country, i don’t have the money or the academic background to do this. Can someone suggest how i can be a part of a writing course in a good university?

I’m assuming you want to write books since most people seem to, please correct me if I’m wrong. It can help to sell out a bit. Writing articles for magazines will give you a portfolio, experience with editors, industry contacts, money and practice. You can write your pet project alongside these articles.

chillout157 - Yes, i am over 21 (27 to be exact). Thanks for the link, but how do i afford the fees of such a university? Also, i hold a bachelor’s degree in a totally different field, , and i work in a telecom company for a daily living, will universities take me into such courses in the first place?

yes they definately will take you, basically how it works is they loan you the money to pay for the fees, and you only have to pay them back if you earn over 15,000, also its a tiny bit at a time,so it is affordable otherwise me (19) wouldnt be able to afford it and i go to that university.

chillout157, thanks again! :-)

“you only have to pay them back if you earn over 15,000″

Tell me, is this applicable to non-UK nationals also? I am not one.

Also, if the student does not make 15K, then would he / she get more time to repay the loan or? (the repayment years get added by ‘x’.. is that how it works?)

Just checked on the websites of a few universities in the US, UK.. all of them need higher fees to be paid by a foreign national, and some of them need some proof of having done something in the same field / proof of interest (how do i prove that i am interested in writing?), all of them need someone to sponsor you / guarantee that you are ’such-and-such-person-of-such-standing’ in the country where you live… i guess all countries today have their security concerns, et cetera, and i respect that, but these conditions in effect close doors for someone like me…

You might want to subscribe to the Writers Digest– they give a lot of tips and ideas:

http://www.writersdigest.com/GeneralM…

Also, you might look into writer’s groups:
http://www.sfwa.org/links/workshops.htm
http://www.forwriters.com/groups.html

You might make a contact there who could eventually help you find a way to go somewhere to study.
