Are you running windows xp?

in the start menu, right click on my computer and click on properties.
Next click on the hardware tab at the top
next click on device manager
click on sound, video and game controllers
right click on everything in here and click on uninstall. Once you have done that, restart your computer and all the devices will be put back and your sound icon should reappear.

The sound drivers may be corrupted, get the latest drivers from the manufacturer website and reinstall them . From http://fixit.in

if the person does what I posted, it will reinstall the drivers back over any corrupted drivers. The drivers are installed from a different place to the drivers that windows uses.
