I’m a 60 yr old disabled lady.
I live in a 20′ X 7′8″, 1978 pull-behind camper. It has a kitchen, bedroom and bathroom. Very confining. I’m on SSDI and SSI for a total of $657.00 mo income. I live in the camper because I can’t afford a bigger one. 27′ to 30′ long X 8″ or 8 1/2″ wide, and a mim. of 1 slide out would be even better but a good used one cost around $5,000.00 to $7,000.00 around here. I live in a camper because the only housing for low income persons my age are high rise apartments and they don’t give you privacy. I’m not into signing in and out everytime I leave to go any where, and I’m not into having someone else having a key to my door. Most only allow one pet and I have two Mini Schnauzers. I had them before I became disabled and not willing to throw them away. To rent a house even a small one would be much higher than living in this RV Park. My disability is invisible. I have a disorder called Angio nuerotic Edema, and I recently had a hole in my heart closed that had caused me to have two strokes. My monthly check covers my lot rent ($300.00) (which includes trash, sewer, water and electric) plus my propane. I have Medicare and Medicaid that take care of my medical expenses and medication. On disability you’re only allowed to have $2,000.00 in savings. On $657.00 mo no way to live and save that much. I drive a 1985 Chevy Blazer. It took most of my Sept. check, after rent, to buy stuff to skirt my camper to help keep the cold Kansas winds out this winter. I get food stamps and in Jan. I’ll be able to apply for liep to help with my propane for heating and cooking. My question is: Why do all the gov. or private org. have programs for winterizing homes but won’t consider a camper a home? My Blazer wouldn’t pull my camper if I needed it too. I can’t afford a better vehicle, let alone a bigger camper. They assume if you live in a camper you’ll be moving around. One RV Park in the area — no way. They seem to think they know what’s best for you. Their suggestion to me is to sell my camper, get rid of one or both my dogs and move into one of the high rises. They have duplexes but they are only for people with kids or singles poor working or disabled under 55 yrs old. I have searched locally and the internet for help trying to get a larger camper to use for a home and a better vehicle to drive, but seems like the only ones who go to those sites are ones asking for help. I can’t get a loan because my income is too low and I couldn’t afford to pay it back. The sites that say you can get gov. grants for personal use are jokes. Most require you pay them and then you find there is nothing to help you. Those who don’t need help don’t go to the sites where the searches come up with for you to ask for help. So is there anyone out there that have a suggestions? Believe me — the gov. knows the disabled live far below the poverty line and they intend to keep them there.
