At one time there were such a thing as mail-order-brides. Some papers still carry ads from women, mostly from Russia or Africa, soliciting to “marry” American men. The majority are scams just to get a bank account number.

Not a good idea. How do you know for sure what you are getting. Do you want to raise the divorce rates?

For more info seek out this book: The most thorough study of international marriages that has been published to date is a 2003 book entitled Romance on a Global Stage, Pen Pals, Virtual Ethnography, and “Mail Order” Marriages, by Nicole Constable, Professor of Anthropology and Research Professor at the University Center for International Studies, University of Pittsburgh. Professor Constable spent two years interviewing hundreds of American men, Chinese and Filipina women, domestic and international NGOs and women’s groups and many owners of international dating companies.

What would be the purpose? Wait till you can be together. Marriage is a close relationship and will work only as the two work closely together.

Not a good reason at all. Don’t do it. Stop now before you have such a tangle that you don’t know how to get out of it and end up with children involved, etc.

It is called marriage by proxy. I don’t know what country are you from but do your homework before you do such thing because marriage by proxy in the States and in many other countries are illegal. Maybe some States allow it in the US. If you do it for money, it is double illegal.

My fiance in the Army is in his last two weeks of Basic training, and has written me and talked to me about how he has been filling out paperwork and trying to set up an appointment with a lawyer. I asked him if it was legite and he said it was through the army. I don’t know exactly how he’s going about it or how it’s going to happen, but I know, at least, when I go see him for graduation I will sign some papers and we will get our marriage license. Of course he didn’t know that marriage license typically last 30 days; we will have to get married at a latter date. So my conclusion is that I know at least through the army you are able to get your marriage license through the mail however getting married with a witness and a magistrate is on your own time in person not through the mail. If anyone else knows more detail on how a soldier goes about this mailed marriage license I would be curious to find out how he’s doing this. I don’t have enough time on the phone with him to explain the matter.

thanx

F_thelakers, what you are saying is totally wrong. I talked to a retired US military officer and he said only through the individual State can you get marriage licence and you have to be present too to get it, the Army does NOT supply or carry out issues regarding marriage licences. So whatever your fiance told you is bogus. So you better clear this out, the Army cannot give you a marriage licence, they have no jurisdiction in this matter.

Well I have to burst your bubble. But MARRIAGE BY PROXY is completely legal. It was designed for special situations. Military Members can get married through the mail. There are requirements: At least one person has to be active in service, Only the state of Montana does this and its about 600.00. I know for a fact because my husband and myself are in the military and took this route.
