I believe it to have roots in the classes of the world and different social statuses.

If I were to dig deep enough, I would find there to be two sides of the story:

The dark side of the world, where it is dangerous and poverty-stricken and imperfect.

The light side of the world, where the garden party takes place and so many things are perfect and white and wonderful.

And then there are the crossings of the two paths, where the main character goes down to see the body and she sees how beautiful death seems to be. She also cares to stop the party, and the mother cares to send a basket.

And then the ending. She sees the body and he looks to be sleeping, at peace and happy. It is, to me, the merging of the two worlds.

Not only that, but it was shown that death is not awful. Instead, she describes it as marvelous.

Therefore, the main theme is the difference between life and death and the point that neither are awful. This is a comparison of the two social statuses portrayed.
