Any contractors out there?

We have a bungalow that was built in 1955. We have a garage and our master bedroom is over the garage. The garage is not insulated and the floor in the bedroom is freezing in the winter.

This year we removed the old ceiling and found absolutely no insulation between the garage and the floor boards. The garage is not insulated on the walls either. We want to insulate using pink insulation not spray foam.

My question concerns the vapor barrier. I think we don’t need any vapor barrier because the vapor barrier should go on the warm side not the cold side. In the case of doing the garage ceiling the garage will still be cold in the winter and install a vapour barrier would only serve to trap the moisture in the ceiling.

What is the proper way to insulate the ceiling of this garage?

Well….When you insulate the floor it helps get rid of the draft but it’s not gonna make your house warmer. If I were you I’d put the initial insulation in then stuff some more insulation on top of it. Make sure you caulk the seams where the insulation meets up with the floor joist. That’s gonna expand and contract on ya

You need to put the vapor barrier on the garage side of the floor joists. In the winter you will be bringing in snow and a lot of moisture from the vehicles that will melt even in winter also the exhaust fumes need to be kept from the bedroom. Make sure that the floor joists are filled completely to avoid cold spots on the floor. Hope this helps :-)
