Or maybe the can opener had other uses before the can?

And if it was invented without a lid, you wouldn’t be able to carry it in a bag or something it’d have to be upright all the time.

Well maybe it was alot like a can, or not called a can opener, or had similar looks to a can opener but not quite because it’s for something else..

hmm let me try to put myself like 2000 years ago :P

we need to put some food and stuff in a safe place for a long time and we dont need any air to get it :D , so we put it in a can :D than they come to open it and see how the food is doing :D i bet they used swords and stuff :D but then the sword was upgraded to the can opener :D

Obviously, or most probably, the can.

You can open a can using other tools. My mom uses knife, most of the time.

You cannot use a can-opener without a can. And you won’t even probably think about inventing one when you won’t need it.
